Tampa Lacrosse Triumphs Over Florida Tech in SSC Championship

Austen Zugelter - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography  The Tampa Spartans proved why they are the class of the field on Sunday, beating the Florida Tech Panthers 12-8 and earning their fourth straight Sunshine State Conference championship in the process. Austen Zugelter had a hat trick and Carson Clough had two goals and an assist for the Panthers, in a losing cause. Matt Vetter had three goals and an assist to lead the Spartans. The first half of the game was tightly contested, with the teams trading goals throughout. Tampa (15-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before Clough and Tyler Covey tallied for the Panthers, tying the game with 5:53 to go in the first quarter. Sean Herdman scored his second of the day 46 seconds later, but he was answered by Zugelter, with 1:25 to go. Panthers Beat Lynn, Earn Berth in SSC Title Game

Carson Clough amassed sedven points Friday night in the Panthers win - Photo credit: James Ragan The Florida Tech Panthers outscored Lynn 5-1 in the second half Friday, leading to a 13-6 victory over the fighting Knights in the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Lacrosse semifinal. With the win, the Panthers landed a spot in the SSC title game on Sunday. Carson Clough led the way for the Panthers, scoring four goals and assisting on three more . Logan Sweeney chipped in with three goals of his own. Johnny Gavin led the Fighting Knights with two goals. Lynn (6-7) scored first, off the stick of Tully Wise. He beat Florida Tech netminder Daniel Flock, with 9:07 left in the first quarter. Panthers Take Down Rollins on Senior Day

Carson Clough - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography The Florida Tech Panthers secured the second seed in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, with a 12-8 victory over Rollins (7-7, 2-3 SSC) on Senior Day. Florida Tech finished the regular season with a 7-6 record, including 3-2 in the SSC. Cody Martin finished with four goals to lead the Panthers scoring parade. He had a hat trick with 2:15 left to go in the second quarter. Carson Clough had a goal and two assists, while Nick Wynne and Tyler Covey had a goal and an assist each. Florida Tech goalie  Daniel Flock  made 11 saves, while his counterpart Ty Wedekind made 14 saves in the loss. The Panthers took 45 shots, with 26 on goal, while 19 of the Tars 32 shots were on net. Tampa Outlasts Florida Tech in Men’s Lacrosse

Tampa used a seven-goal first quarter to put the Panthers behind the eight ball early and the visitors never recovered. With the victory, the Spartans secured their fourth straight SSC title. Logan Sweeney and Reid Chaconas were the only multi-goal scorers for Florida Tech in this one, each finishing with two goals. Carson Clough  led the Panthers with four points (1 G, 3 A). Jake Mosher McGraw and Conor Whipple each had a hat trick in front of the home crowd. Florida Tech starting goalie Daniel Flock gave up 14 goals and Matt Young, who played only 10 seconds, gave up one goal. Statistically, the game was close in a lot of categories, but Tampa held a 28-19 advantage in ground balls and that meant more possession time. Florida Tech Lacrosse Loses to Saint Leo

The Panthers never led in this one, getting within one goal a few different times, before Saint Leo would create distance. Saint Leo (9-3, 1-2 SSC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Panthers goalie Daniel Flock , to start the game, before Carson Clough got the Panthers on the board, with 4:18 to go in the first quarter. A man-up goal by Nick Wynne , made it 3-2 with 1:05 to go, but Anthony Visintin pushed the lead to two, with his goal 28 seconds before the quarter ended. Brett Pohlmeyer cut the Lions lead to 4-3, 2:02 into the second, but Saint Leo went on a three-goal run, making it 7-3, before Cody Martin scored with a man advantage, with 2:22 to go in the half. Carson Clough - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography Florida Tech Men’s lacrosse played under the lights Saturday at Florida Tech Panthers Stadium and the spotlight was bright, as they scored a 19-8 victory over the Florida Southern Moccasins. Logan Sweeney and Nick Wynne had five goals each, while Carson Clough tallied two goals and had four assists, leading the Panther rout. Florida Tech goalie Daniel Flock , who was named the national Defensive Player of the Week this week, made 15 saves. Sweeney got the scoring started 2:17 into the game and Wynne scored back-to-back goals six-plus minutes apart to make it 3-0. Adam Utter got the Mocs’ on the board with 2:58 left in the first period and Flock gave up a late one to Liam Winwood, with just seven seconds to go, closing the gap to 3-2. FIT Lacrosse Opens Conference Play with Win at Lynn

Daniel Flock - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography Despite being overtaken in many of the key categories, the Florida Tech Men’s lacrosse team won their fourth consecutive game Saturday, beating host Lynn 11-10 in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both teams. Florida Tech (5-4, 1-0 SSC) was outshot 49-37, they lost the faceoff battle 37-29 and lost eight of 15 faceoffs. Despite all that, the Panthers won where it mattered… on the scoreboard. Addison Abramson scored the decisive goal with his Panthers a man down. It was only the second goal of the season for him, but it may be awhile before he scores a bigger one. Reid Chaconas led the Panthers with two goals and two assists and Nick Wynne added two goals. An impressive performance by Daniel Flock in goal, made those points count. Nick Wynne was a man possessed in this one, scoring four goals and picking up four assists. Logan Sweeney scored four goals and assisted on two more. He had a hat trick with 5:11 left in the first quarter. Cody Martin had a six-point day, with a hat trick and three assists. Carson Clough scored two goals before they hit the seven-minute mark of the first quarter. The Panthers (4-4) scored early and often in this one, with 32 of their 55 shots being on net. The Argonauts fall to 3-7 overall and have now lost two in a row. Florida Tech Lacrosse Upsets Fifth-Ranked Seton Hill

Nick Wynne - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography The Florida Tech men’s lacrosse team made history on Saturday, beating the fifth-ranked team in the country, Seton Hill, 5-3 in Charlotte, NC. It marks the first time Florida Tech has beaten a team ranked in the top five, in the six-year history of the program. Nick Wynne netted a hat-trick and Logan Sweeney had a goal and two assists for the Panthers. Brett Pohlmeyer also tallied in the win. Goaltender Daniel Flock made those points stand up, making 19 saves. Florida Tech (3-4) had three man-up goals in the contest and Lance Pavlina took control at the faceoff X, winning six of the 10 draws he was involved in. It was the seventh goal of the day for Downs, who was a one-man wrecking crew for the Cardinals on this day. His big day held up, thanks to a big performance from goalie Jake Lilly, who came up with 13 saves. Florida Tech took 51 shots, with 24 of them on goal. The Panthers (1-4) were led by Nick Wynne , who had four goals and Cody Martin , who added three goals and an assist, for his four-point day. It was another hard-luck loss for the Panthers, who have lost all three games by a combined five goals. The Ninth-ranked Trojans scored eight goals in the second half, improving their record to 3-0. Daniel Flock took the loss between the pipes for Florida Tech, falling to 1-3 on the season. The Panthers played well in the first half, getting goals 10 seconds apart from Reid Chaconas and Nick Wynne , against Mount Olive keeper Will Urban. Less than a minute later, Charlie Morrisette made it a 3-0 lead for the visitors. The Trojans scored the next three goals, tying the game on Luke Dalman’s tally, with 4:39 left in the quarter. Panthers Comeback Thwarted by Bulldogs

Austen Zugelter - Photo credit: James Ragan Photography Austen Zugelter scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter on Sunday, but the climb up the mountain proved to be too much, as the Panthers fell 11-8 to the Wingate Bulldogs in a non-conference lacrosse matchup. Dylan Riley scored twice, while Nick Wynne and Carson Clough had single tallies for the Panthers. The Bulldogs were led by Conor Gronbach and Alex Llerandi, who each scored twice. The Panthers took 38 shots against Wingate goalie Will Sheridan, who made a couple key saves in the fourth quarter with the Panthers on the doorstep. He was credited with 12 saves. The Bulldogs took 34 shots, with Panthers netminder Daniel Flock making nine saves. Flock struggled out of the gate, giving up three goals in the first quarter. Florida Tech Falls Late Against Adelphi

The Florida Tech Panthers lacrosse team put up a great effort against the ninth ranked Adelphi Panthers on Thursday, losing 10-8 in a tightly contested game. Florida Tech goaltender Daniel Flock stood tall, against a highly skilled Adelphi squad, coming up with nine saves. The Panthers of Florida Tech scored six unanswered goals at one point, turning a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead, but Adelphi scored five straight from about the halfway point of the fourth, to the end of the game and escaped with a victory. Florida Tech (1-1) did a lot of things right on Thursday statistically, winning in shots 37-29 and ground balls 37-31. They were 2-for-5 on the man-up, while AU was 1-for-3 and FIT was successful on 19 of their 20 clear attempts. The Florida Tech Men’s Lacrosse spelled win Wynne on Saturday, as Nick Wynne scored five goals and assisted on three more, helping the Panthers to a 20-6 season opening win over the Lincoln Memorial Railspliiters. The Panthers tallied 55 shots as a team, most of those coming against Railsplitters starting goaltender Joe Medel, who gave up 16 goals and made 14 saves. He was under siege all day, against a Panthers offense that had double digit shots in three of the four quarters. Wynne wasn’t the only Panther to have a big day scoring wise. Logan Sweeney scored a hat-trick of his own and Matt Weinstein scored twice. The Panthers got single tallies from 10 guys, including Tyler Covey , affectionately nicknamed “dump truck.” He scored late in the fourth and assisted on a goal soon after.
