The 19th ranked Florida Tech Panthers took one on the chin Saturday, losing to a very good Saint Leo team, 13-8 in a Sunshine State Conference lacrosse game. The Panthers never led in this one, getting within one goal a few different times, before Saint Leo would create distance.

Saint Leo (9-3, 1-2 SSC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Panthers goalie Daniel Flock, to start the game, before Carson Clough got the Panthers on the board, with 4:18 to go in the first quarter. A man-up goal by Nick Wynne, made it 3-2 with 1:05 to go, but Anthony Visintin pushed the lead to two, with his goal 28 seconds before the quarter ended.

Brett Pohlmeyer cut the Lions lead to 4-3, 2:02 into the second, but Saint Leo went on a three-goal run, making it 7-3, before Cody Martin scored with a man advantage, with 2:22 to go in the half. Jake Gilmour answered with a man-up goal, to double the Lions lead.

The Panthers (6-5, 2-1 SSC) went on a three-goal run of their own, with Tyler Covey, Clough and Addison Abramson, who beat Lions’ goalie Thomas Tatarian with less than one second remaining on the clock, closing the gap to 8-7 and seemingly giving the Panthers momentum, heading into the second half.

Unfortunately, the only goal of the third quarter went the way of the Lions. Covey was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct with 41 seconds to go and it took Charlie Kurtenbach 21 seconds to score, giving the home team a 9-7 lead, heading to the fourth.

Pohlmeyer scored his second of the day, with 10:08 left in the game, to cut the lead to 9-8, but that would be the last goal the Panthers would muster on this day. Kurtenbach would score again, while Josh Kaufling would finish off his hat-trick, with back-to-back tallies. Jake Bye got his second of the day, with 2:39 to go, capping the scoring.

Flock would not finish the game in goal, as he picked up penalties for slashing and pushing, with 1:20 to go in the game. He was replaced by Matt Young.

The Panthers took 48 shots to the Lions 43. Flock was credited with 16 saves, while Tatarian saved 20. Florida Tech won 16 of the 23 faceoffs, but lost on ground balls, 41-29.

FIT will wrap up their road schedule next Saturday, when they take on Sunshine State Conference foe, Tampa. That game is set for an 8:00 p.m. faceoff.
