Florida Tech Falls Late Against Adelphi

The Florida Tech Panthers lacrosse team put up a great effort against the ninth ranked Adelphi Panthers on Thursday, losing 10-8 in a tightly contested game. Florida Tech goaltender Daniel Flock stood tall, against a highly skilled Adelphi squad, coming up with nine saves.

The Panthers of Florida Tech scored six unanswered goals at one point, turning a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead, but Adelphi scored five straight from about the halfway point of the fourth, to the end of the game and escaped with a victory.

Florida Tech (1-1) did a lot of things right on Thursday statistically, winning in shots 37-29 and ground balls 37-31. They were 2-for-5 on the man-up, while AU was 1-for-3 and FIT was successful on 19 of their 20 clear attempts. Unfortunately, they did not win on the scoreboard and that’s the only number that counts.

Adelphi (1-0) was led by Nick Racalbuto, who had four goals and Michael Osmundsen who had three, to go along with one assist. The other Racalbuto in the game, Chris, had a goal and an assist.

Florida Tech opened the scoring with a goal by Tyler Covey, 2:15 into the game, but Adelphi went on to score five unanswered, two of those by Nick Racalbuto and one by Chris. Florida Tech got one back, with 7:07 to go on the half, off the stick of Cody Martin. The score held at 5-2, as the game hit the half.

Florida Tech stormed out in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals. Nick Wynne, who had five goals and three assists in the first game of the season,  scored 15 seconds into the third, making it a 5-3 contest. Brett Pohlmeyer and Nate Menninger scored 16 seconds apart to tie things up at five, later in the quarter.

The home team ripped off another three in a row to start the fourth quarter, with Dylan Riley and Menninger scoring 11 seconds apart, giving the Panthers a 7-5 lead, with 12:58 to go in the game.

Logan Sweeney capped the six-goal outburst with a goal, 2:01 later and just like that, Tech had an 8-5 lead.

Credit Adelphi, who never panicked and took advantage of Florida Tech’s inability to maintain possession at times after talking shots against goaltender Brendan Mcdougal, who had 12 saves on the day.

Gordon Purdie, Jr broke the Florida Tech streak with 9:39 left, beating Flock and making it 8-6. Unfortunately for Florida Tech that started a flurry of goals that the Panthers defense just wasn’t able to withstand. Nick Racalbuto scored 17 seconds later, followed by Osmundsen 10 seconds later, tying the game at eight.

Osmundsen and Nick Racalbuto less than two and a half minutes later, capping the comeback for the visitors.

Florida Tech is just starting their sixth season as a program and while this would have been a huge statement win for the program, just the fact that the Panthers put up a valiant effort, says a lot about the strides the program has made and gave fans a peek into what is shaping up to be a bright future for Florida Tech Lacrosse.

The Panthers will look to get back in the win column Sunday, as they travel to Wingate on Sunday. Opening face-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
