Austen Zugelter scored two of his four goals in the fourth quarter on Sunday, but the climb up the mountain proved to be too much, as the Panthers fell 11-8 to the Wingate Bulldogs in a non-conference lacrosse matchup.

Dylan Riley scored twice, while Nick Wynne and Carson Clough had single tallies for the Panthers. The Bulldogs were led by Conor Gronbach and Alex Llerandi, who each scored twice.

The Panthers took 38 shots against Wingate goalie Will Sheridan, who made a couple key saves in the fourth quarter with the Panthers on the doorstep. He was credited with 12 saves. The Bulldogs took 34 shots, with Panthers netminder Daniel Flock making nine saves.

Flock struggled out of the gate, giving up three goals in the first quarter. Daniel Godwin started the scoring 2:51 in and Gronbach scored just over five minutes later with the extra man, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Zugelter’s first goal of the day came with 4:38 left, but Tanner Kotch scored a man-up goal to make it 3-1.

Marc James and Alex Llerandi made it 5-1 early in the second quarter, before Wynne answered with a goal just past the halfway point of the second quarter. The Panthers were unable to grab the momentum after that goal unfortunately, as the Bulldogs got goals 22 seconds apart from Gronbach and Vinny Aiello, as the half was coming to a close.

The halftime adjustments by Panthers head coach Ryan McAleavey must have clicked with the Panthers who were outscored 3-2 in the third quarter. Zugelter scored early and Riley scored late in the third, cutting the deficit to 10-4 after three quarters.

Austin Murphy scored the only goal of the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs with 12:29 left, giving his squad a 11-4 lead, but the Panthers would reel off four straight goals to close the gap. Riley hit the back of the net with just over nine minutes left and Zugelter scored 1:19 later, making it an 11-6 game.

Clough scored with 6:19 left, but Sheridan made a big save on Brett Pohlmeyer with 4:01 left and backed that up with a save on Riley three seconds later. Zugelter didn’t miss on his next attempt, as he scored with 3:23 to go, closing the gap to 11-8. Sheridan made his final save of the day moments later on Clough, ending the game.

The Panthers road trip continues Saturday, as they head to North Carolina to take on Mount Olive at noon.
