Florida Tech Trounces LMU in Lacrosse Opener

The Florida Tech Men’s Lacrosse spelled win Wynne on Saturday, as Nick Wynne scored five goals and assisted on three more, helping the Panthers to a 20-6 season opening win over the Lincoln Memorial Railspliiters.

The Panthers tallied 55 shots as a team, most of those coming against Railsplitters starting goaltender Joe Medel, who gave up 16 goals and made 14 saves. He was under siege all day, against a Panthers offense that had double digit shots in three of the four quarters.

Wynne wasn’t the only Panther to have a big day scoring wise. Logan Sweeney scored a hat-trick of his own and Matt Weinstein scored twice. The Panthers got single tallies from 10 guys, including Tyler Covey, affectionately nicknamed “dump truck.” He scored late in the fourth and assisted on a goal soon after.

Florida Tech (1-0) was outscored in the second quarter, 3-2. The final goal of the quarter for the Railsplitters came off a faceoff and the Panthers didn’t defend. Hunter Clark went untouched from the faceoff circle into the offensive end and blasted the ball by goalie Daniel Flock, with 14 seconds to go in the half.

Panthers coach Ryan McAleavey called a timeout after that, knowing you don’t want to give up a goal like that, late in the half.

Florida Tech didn’t let the little blip at the end of the half affect them, as they came back and scored another five goals in the third quarter. Reid Chaconas, Nate Menninger, Weinstein and Austen Zugelter all found the back of the net, giving the Panthers a 12-0 lead. Meanwhile Flock did not allow Lincoln Memorial to get one by him.

Flock made eight saves on the day, allowing six goals between the pipes. He played all 60 minutes and although not challenged often, he did give up three more goals in the fourth, which didn’t matter, because the Panthers answered with eight of their own and giving FIT about as convincing a win as you could hope for in the season opener.

The Panthers are home again this Thursday, hosting Adelphi at 3:00 p.m.
