The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals got a goal off the stick of Dereck Downs with four seconds left on the clock, earning a 12-11 victory over Florida Tech in a non-conference lacrosse game on Saturday.

It was the seventh goal of the day for Downs, who was a one-man wrecking crew for the Cardinals on this day. His big day held up, thanks to a big performance from goalie Jake Lilly, who came up with 13 saves. Florida Tech took 51 shots, with 24 of them on goal.

The Panthers (1-4) were led by Nick Wynne, who had four goals and Cody Martin, who added three goals and an assist, for his four-point day. Daniel Flock made eight saves on the day for the Panthers, but was stung a couple times at the end of quarters, which ended up being the difference in the game.
The Panthers went down 2-0 midway through the first quarter, but goals by Wynne and Martin left the score tied at two, heading into the second quarter. Downs and Wynne traded goals early in the second, before goals by Charlie Morrisette and Martin scored back-to-back goals about four minutes apart, to give the home team a 5-3 lead.

Downs scored with 1:24 left in the quarter, to make it a 5-4 game, but Reid Chaconas tallied with 50 seconds left, to give the Panthers their two-goal lead back, heading to the locker room.

The game went the way of the Cardinals in the third quarter, as they outscored the Panthers 5-1. The toughest of those goals was the last one, coming with nine seconds left in the quarter, as the ball wasn’t even shot, it was rolling on the ground and snuck by Flock. Downs was credited with the goal and gave the Cardinals a 9-7 lead, heading into the fourth quarter.

Martin and Chaconas scored less than two minutes apart to tie the game at 10, with 10:32 to go. After Downs struck again with 6:13 to go, Chaconas answered 1:50 later, knotting things up again. Downs put an exclamation point on his day, with the game-winner on a rocket past Flock with four seconds left.

This was a tough one to lose for the Panthers, especially considering they dominated in many statistical categories. They held a 53-43 edge in ground balls and were 12-of-13 on clears. They also dominated at the x, winning 11 more faceoffs than the Cardinals.

The Panthers will look to rebound on Tuesday, when they host Chestnut Hill at 12:30 p.m. at the Olin Complex.
