Florida Tech got eight strong innings from starting pitcher Ty Cohen on Thursday, leading the Panthers
to an 8-3 win over the visiting Embry-Riddle Eagles in game one of a three-game
series.
The Panthers (22-14) jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Aidan
Brady, in the bottom of the second. Ryan
Sinzenich reached on an error to start the inning. Trent Masih singled to right and the throw in was errant, allowing
Sinzenich to score.
Embry-Riddle did most of their damage against Cohen in the
top of the third. Kyle Guttveg had an RBI single and stole second. After a
passed ball moved him to third, he scored on a Christopher Medina fielder’s
choice. That put the Eagles up, 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, Tim Retamoza
took over for Brady. He promptly hit John
Sternagel, who stole second base moments later. One out later, Nick Capra moved him to third with a
ground out. After David Wilson
walked, Retamoza threw a passed ball with Ryan
Sinzenich at the plate, scoring Sternagel and tying the game at two.
The Panthers added to the lead in the fifth against reliever
Matthew Russell (1-6) on back-to-back RBI singles by Wilson and Sinzenich,
giving Florida Tech a 4-2 lead. They put the game away in the seventh, with a
four-run inning.
The first run came on an error at second on a ball hit by
Sinzenich, the third of the game by the Eagles. Trent Masih drew a bases loaded walk and Grant McKown followed that with an RBI single, making it 7-2. Reid Neal’s RBI single capped the
Panthers scoring.
Embry-Riddle (12-26) got a run in the eighth. Medina hit a
one out double and went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly
by Zach Howard.
Cohen got through the eighth with no further damage and his
night was over after eight innings. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five
hits, walking three and striking out five. Justin
Barney retired the side in order in the ninth.
