Modica, Panthers Stay Hot in Win Over IUP

Following her six-goal, two assist performance on Thursday, in a 22-4 win over Tusculum, Florida Tech senior Allie Modica scored four more goals Saturday. Her six-point night against Indiana University of Pennsylvania led the Panthers to a 16-12 victory.

Florida Tech came into the game ranked 17th in the country, while the Crimson Hawks came in ranked 14th. It was the first game of the season for the visitors, while the Panthers reeled off their seventh consecutive victory.

The Panthers (7-1) has cruised to victory in their last handful of games, but they got all they could handle Saturday, before pulling away late. The first 10 goals of the game, were scored in 15:09 and there was no leader. Aleah Fjelstad, Modica (twice) Sara Grenier and Sam Schiano all tallied for Florida Tech in that span.

Caroline Dunleavy and Fjelstad made it 7-5, with 10 minutes left in the first half. After a goal by Kendall Loviscky pulled IUP within one, Leah Dunn making it an 8-6 game, with 5:15 to go in the half. Mary Gormley made it a three-goal cushion with 3:51 to go and that score would hold as the halftime horn sounded.

The Panthers kept the momentum to start the second half, with goals from Dunn and Modica, building the Panthers lead to 11-6. The Crimson Hawks stormed back in a big way, putting five straight goals into Stephanie Stuart’s net. Adriana Greco had three of them and just like that, the game was knotted at 11.

Dunleavy got the lead back for the Panthers with 19:34 to go and 57 seconds later, it was Fjelstad firing one by Angela Lontoc in the IUP net, making it a 13-11 game. Grenier struck again, with the Panthers shorthanded, making it a three-goal game.

Lauren Tybor scored with 11 minutes left and Greco, who led all scorers with six goals, scored the last one for the Crimson Hawks with 8:05 to go, making it 15-12. Florida Tech won the next draw and played keep away for the better part of the next four minutes, as they ran time off the clock.

Modica scored her final goal of the night with 41 seconds remaining, to put it out of reach and give the Panthers a big victory over a ranked opponent.


Florida Tech took 32 shots (28 on goal) to the Crimson Hawks 22 (19 on goal). Stuart made seven saves for the Panthers and she has won all seven of the Panthers games in net. IUP turned it over 29 times to 19 for Florida Tech and the Panthers won the ground ball battle 27-17.

Next up for the Panthers is a home meeting with Concordia University, out of Minnesota. First draw is set for 7:00 p.m., Thursday.
