Lindenwood Overpowers Florida Tech in Second Half

The Florida Tech women’s lacrosse Team watched an 11-6 second half lead go up in smoke Friday night, losing to the Lindenwood Lions by the score of 15-12 in the season opener for both teams.

The Panthers were led by Allie Modica who had three goals and two assists. Caroline Dunleavy had two goals and one assist and Lauren Tybor had two goals in her Panthers debut.

This was a game that the Panthers had within reach, but Maria Johnson took over in the second half, winning an overwhelming majority of the draws and the Lions turned them into goals, scoring seven times in just over five minutes in the second half.

Florida Tech (0-1) got off to a good start, scoring four goals in just over four minutes. Aleah Fjelstad, who was making her Panthers debut scored twice in that run, bookended by goals from Leah Dunn and Modica.

After the Lions made a three-goal run, Tybor scored her first goal 5:38 into the contest, giving the Panthers 5-3 lead. Tybor was knocked down moments before that and spent some time on the sidelines, but she was feeling good after that goal.

Morgan Judd answered for the Lions, but Sam Schiano and Tybor would score 34 seconds apart, giving the Panthers a 7-3 lead, with 3:56 left. The teams traded goals and it was an 8-5 lead for the Panthers as Mary Gormley scored with 38.9 seconds left in the first half.

First half stats were fairly even, with the Panthers leading in shots 15-14 and 13-12 in ground balls and scored two of three free-position goals, with the Lions scoring one. Florida Tech goalie Stephanie Stuart and Lions goalie Rachel Ortell made five saves each.

The second half got off to a good start for the Panthers, with Dunleavy scoring two goals 40 seconds apart and Modica adding one with 24:07 to go in the game. Just like that, the Panthers were up 11-5.

The game of lacrosse is known for runs, so the back-and-forth nature of the game was not a surprise, but the key is how the team on the wrong end of the run recovers. To say Lindenwood recovered nicely would be an understatement.

The Lions (1-0) went on a seven-goal run, with Maria Johnson, Allison Hurley and Judd all scoring twice in the run. Judd had goals just 25 seconds apart. By the time the scoring avalanche was over, the visitors had a 12-11 lead.

Johnson was a big reason why the Lions had an 11-4 advantage in the second half on draws. The Panthers did not have an answer for her. They honestly didn’t have an answer for Lindenwood in general in that second half.

Modica stopped the bleeding temporarily for the Panthers when she tied the game up with 12:54 to go, but Judd scored her fourth goal of the game, Sophie Buelow scored her third and Hurley got her fourth, as the Lions scored the last three goals of the game.

Florida Tech will now hit the road for a game against Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina, on Friday, February 24. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
