The Florida Tech women’s basketball team were doomed by a poor third quarter Friday night that saw the Lynn Fighting Knights outscore the Panthers 22-11, en route to a 71-61 Sunshine State Conference victory. The loss was the fourth in a row for Florida Tech.

The Panthers troubles started early when leading scorer Shequana Harris was called for a foul two seconds into the contest. She picked up a second foul early and her third, just as the third quarter got underway. When all was said, and done, Harris played three minutes and scored two points.

Florida Tech (6-6, 2-4 SSC) held their own early without her, leading 13-12 with 1:23 left in the first quarter, thanks to a layup by Gudlau Juliusdottir before Lynn overtook them, scoring five straight points and leading 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Lynn (7-4, 2-3 SSC) extended their lead to 23-15 early in the second quarter and were up 27-19 before Gracie Doane hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 27-22. That Sparked the Panthers a bit, as they went on a 9-2 run, closing with another Doane three with three seconds left, getting Florida Tech within one, 29-28, at the half.

Doane ended the half with nine points, going 3-for-3 beyond the arc, leading the visitors after 20 minutes of action.

Lynn got a three from Paola Vazquez 38 seconds into the third and led 32-28. After Harris scored a basket for FIT and made it a 32-30 game, she committed a foul moments later. With her out of the game, the home team went on a 6-0 run, leading 38-30.

Things went downhill from there, as the Panthers were outscored 22-11 in the quarter and trailed 51-39, as the third quarter came to an end.

Down 63-48 with 2:44 remaining in the contest, the Panthers ripped off 10 straight points, cutting a 15-point deficit down to five. Unfortunately for the Panthers, they were forced to foul and Lynn built their lead back up, going 8-for-10 from the stripe and earning the 10-point victory.

Julie McCarthy scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Panthers in a losing cause.

Florida Tech has dug themselves a bit of a hole in conference play, but they will look to right the ship Wednesday night when they host Embry-Riddle at 5:30 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
