FIT Women’s Soccer Splits Two Games

Coming off their big win over #1 Grand Valley State last week, the Florida Tech Women’s Soccer team returned to the field this week, losing 2-0 to Sunshine State Conference foe Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, before rebounding on Saturday, with a 1-0 win over Florida Southern on Senior Night.

Wednesday’s game in Fort Lauderdale was a letdown, coming off that victory over the number one team in the country a week earlier. It took Nova Southeastern less than two minutes to get on the board with an Alexys Nowak tally.

The Sharks scored again five minutes later, with Bailey Corbin beating FIT goalie Karlyn Prisco with a header, giving the home team a convincing 2-0 lead. Nichole Poppe assisted on both Sharks goals.

Nova Southeastern got off 10 shots in the first half, while the Panthers managed just four. Florida Tech was hampered by the fact that Keira McCarthy was unable to play in this game. Aubri Williamson did her best, firing four shots on goal.

Prisco played much better in the second half and finished with six saves. The Panthers as a team played much better in the final 45 minutes, firing seven shots toward the net. Sharks’ goalie Ida Norstrom was up to the task, ending her night with five saves.

The Panthers celebrated Senior Night on Saturday, as they took on the Florida Southern Moccasins at Rick Stottler Field. McCarthy returned to the field and led the Panthers in shots with six. Two of those had to be saved by Florida Southern goalie Helena Norrstrom.

Despite a 13-6 edge in shots in the first half, the Panthers were unable to find the back of the net and the game was scoreless at the end of the first half.

The Panthers (8-4, 3-4 SSC) dented the scoreboard early in the second half when Williamson found Mary Watson near the right post and she drilled it past Norrstrom for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Panthers.

Florida Tech’s offensive barrage continued in the second half, as they outshot the Moccasins 12-6 in the second half and helping Watson’s first goal of the season hold up as the game winner.

The FIT Women are right back at it on Monday, taking on Palm Beach Atlantic at home. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
