The Brevard County Manatees got a series win on Thursday, taking the finale of a three-game set from the Lakeland Flying Tigers by the score of 7-3. Dustin DeMuth continued his hot hitting in the series, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, leading the Manatees’ 12 hit attack. Elvis Rubio had two hits and Jose Cuas drove in two runs. Lakeland helped out, committing five errors in the contest.

Tyler Alexander (4-4) got the start for Lakeland and the Manatees got to him early. DeMuth singled and was chased home on a double by Elvis Rubio. The visitors added another run in the second inning, beginning with Cuas drawing a one out walk. A double by Malik Collymore got him to third and he scored when Johnny Davis grounded out. Just like that, the Manatees’ led 2-0.

Clint Terry got the start for Brevard County and gave up a double to Mike Gerber to start the bottom of the second. Joey Pankake’s sac fly got him to third and he scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Manatees’ catcher Dustin Houle, cutting the lead in half. Lakeland took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring twice against Terry.

Christin Stewart drew a walk to start the inning and came home on a Kade Scivicque double, tying the game at 2-2. Scivicque would later score on a Pankake sacrifice fly, giving the home team the lead. Terry would finish the third, but given that he allowed three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out one, his night was done. He threw 57 pitches, 33 for strikes. Kender Villegas (4-4) took over on the mound to start the fourth.

The Manatees (18-35) would regain the lead in the sixth inning. A Rubio single was sandwiched between two outs. Back-to-back singles by Fidel Pena and Houle loaded the bases. Cuas followed with a hot shot to left, scoring two and giving the Manatees a 4-3 lead. There was an error on the play allowing Cuas to go to second and Houle stayed where the single landed him, at third. Confesor Lara took over for Alexander and was able to get the final out of the inning. Alexander went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two, throwing 91 pitches, 64 strikes.

Corey Knebel who is rehabbing with the Manatees, took over for Villegas to start the bottom of the sixth. It was the second appearance in the series for Knebel, who got an inning of work on Tuesday night. Villegas pitched two scoreless innings, giving up three hits. He threw 15 of 20 pitches for strikes. Knebel followed that up with two innings of one hit baseball, striking out four and earning the hold. He threw 31 pitches, 22 for strikes.

The Manatees added a run in the seventh on a DeMuth RBI single, one in the eighth on a steal of second by Collymore, which prompted Cuas to take off for home. He made it safely and Collymore went to third on an errant throw. That made it 6-3. An RBI single by George Iskenderian in the ninth, capped the Manatees scoring. Collymore finished 2-for-4 at the plate.

Jon Olczak, who started the eighth on the mound for the Manatees, continued in the ninth, allowing a single to lead things off. He got through the rest of the inning with minimal trouble and earned his fifth save of the season. He struck out two in two innings, throwing 22 pitches, 16 for strikes.

The Manatees will travel to Port St. Lucie Friday, to start a split home-at-home series against the St. Lucie Mets. Eric Hanhold (2-6, 3.78 ERA) takes the mound for the Manatees against Ricky Knapp (5-3, 2.08 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
