FIT Volleyball Week in Review
The Florida Tech volleyball team hosted the Panther
Invitational Tournament last weekend and got their season off to a solid 2-1
start. On Friday September 2, the Panthers opened against Georgia College,
winning the first two sets, on their way to a 3-1 victory.
The Panthers won the first two sets convincingly, 25-19 and
25-17, before dropping the third set 25-21. The fourth set was a nail-biter,
with Florida Tech needing to win eight of the last 10 points to squeak out a
27-25 victory.
Senior outside hitter, Jenna
Schaffer had 14 kills and nine digs to lead Tech, with Sophomore Olivia Hersey driving home 13 kills of
her own. Sophomore Kiersten Rosa set a new
career-high with 38 assists, and added an impressive 14 digs.
On Saturday, the team played two matches, shutting out
Wilmington 3-0 in the morning game and losing to Puerto Rico Mayaguez in the
tournament final. The Panthers were too strong for the Wildcats of Wilmington,
winning that match 25-14, 25-16 and 25-19.
Schaffer was busy again, picking up 11 kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore Kelly Germain filled the
stat sheet with eight kills, an ace and a block. Rosa, fresh off her career
high assist total on Friday, shared nicely again on Saturday, with 26 more
assists in the first match and rifled four aces at the Wildcats as well.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Puerto Rico
Mayaguez in the title game, but the Bobcats rattled off three straight set
wins, 25-16, 25-18 and 25-22 in the fourth, leading to a 3-1 victory. Germain
led Florida Tech with 14 kills and Rosa added 12 of her own.
Rosa picked up 29 assists in the losing effort giving her an
impressive total of 93 for the three-game tournament. Junior Becca Bower made her presence felt,
with 20 digs and five assists.
The Panthers have a busy weekend ahead, as they compete in
the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach in West Palm. FIT kicks things off at 10:00
a.m. Friday against the McKendree Bearcats and will play the Ichabods of
Washburn at 5:00 p.m.
They will play another doubleheader on Saturday, with the
Lee Flames providing the competition at 10:00 a.m. and the Ferris State
Bulldogs come calling at 5:00 p.m.
