The Brevard County Manatees managed just two hits in a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees, at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Both hits came off the bat of leadoff man Corey Ray, who singled in the fourth and hit a home run in the seventh, breaking up the shutout.

The Yankees started the scoring in the third inning, against Manatees starter Cody PonceDevyn Bolasky tripled with one out and came home on a single off the bat of Wes Wilson. After Ponce got the second out, Jeff Hendrix doubled, putting runners at the corners. Gleyber Torres followed with a walk to load the bases and Trey Amburgey’s single made it 2-0.

When all was said and done, the Yankees sent eight to the plate, had four hits and a walk. They added some insurance, with two more in the fifth. Wilson singled and Jorge Mateo walked. A fly out by Jeff Hendrix got Wilson to third and Mateo later stole second. Torres plated them both with a single, making it 4-0.

Meanwhile, Yankees starter Sean Carley was busy pitching the best game of his career. He walked Jose Cuas in the third and promptly picked him off. Ray got his first hit leading off the fourth and was caught stealing. Carley went on to complete the fifth inning and because of those two plays, left the game having faced the minimum.

Carley (1-0) left allowing the one hit, one walk and struck out six. He threw 62 pitches (44 strikes) and picked up his first win in exactly a year. His last win came in relief last August 27, as a member of the Charleston River Dogs in Low-A.

Eric Ruth took over for Carley in the sixth and gave up Ray’s fourth homer of the season, leading off the seventh. He was the third baserunner for the Manatees and made sure they couldn’t retire him, with a no-doubt blast.

Clint Terry took over for Ponce, starting the bottom of the seventh. Ponce (2-7) allowed seven hits and four earned runs in six innings. He walked two and struck out three, throwing 87 pitches, 56 for strikes. Terry allowed just two hits in his two innings of work, walked two and struck out one. He threw 38 pitches, 20 for strikes.

Dustin Houle drew a walk in the eighth against Travis Hissong, but was stranded as the fourth and final Manatees’ baserunner. Hissong pitched the final two innings, picking up his third save.

Brevard County (38-92, 15-47), will look to avoid a sweep when Kodi Medeiros takes the mound Sunday, against Justus Sheffield. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
