Svensson's Two Goals Not Enough Against #20 NSU

Florida Tech scored early and they scored late, but in between they gave up three goals to the 20th ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Wednesday night, resulting in a 3-2 loss at Rick Stottler Field.

Elin Svensson got the Panthers off to a good start, scoring 2:24 into the match, off a pass from Monica Zabian. Nova goalie Jordan Lentz came out to try to cut down the angle, but Svensson got it by her for her first of two goals on the night.

The Panthers (4-2-1, 1-1 SSC) took a couple more shots with Kiana Zanganeh and Svensson forcing Lentz to make a couple saves about 20 minutes after the goal. FIT held the lead until a free kick by Monica Orteu from 40 yards out was sent just over the outstretched arm of Panthers goaltender Karlyn Prisco and into the upper-right corner of the net. It was a great effort by Prisco to play the ball, as she leaped and came down into teammate Macey Hedelund, who was stationed at the far post.

The Sharks led the Panthers in shots, 10-6 as the half ended in Melbourne. They also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Panthers had four shots on goal, while NSU had one and they made it count. Lentz made three saves for Nova and Prisco was not credited with a save.

Svensson got a good chance 2:27 into the second half but Lentz made the save. Maria Munoz, who was named the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week on Monday, took a good shot a couple minutes later that went just wide. She had another shot about 10 minutes later that Lentz made a save on.

At the 64:53 mark, Orteu took the first of two consecutive corner kicks. On the second one, she found Gabriela Alfaro in front and she knocked it in after the ball bounced off the crossbar a couple times, giving Nova a 2-1 lead.

NSU (6-1, 2-0 SSC) got an insurance goal from Sofia Del Stabile with 10:39 left in the game after Prisco made a few saves earlier to keep the Panthers in the game.

Turns out Nova needed that insurance goal, as the Panthers pressured in the offensive end, with Svensson finding room deep in the box. She ripped it by Lentz with 4:58 to go in the game.

The Sharks defense held up from there on out, not giving the Panthers much of a chance as they looked for the equalizer.

The Sharks dominated in shots 27-14, with a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal. They dominated the Panthers in corner kicks, 17-1. Prisco made nine saves in the contest and Lentz made seven.

The Panthers will look to bounce back on Saturday when they go on the road for an SSC showdown against Saint Leo. The match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
