The Florida Tech Panthers were riding high going into Saturday’s doubleheader against Tampa. They won Friday’s opener over the Spartans 14-8, sending Tampa to their second conference loss of the season. Unfortunately, Florida Tech couldn’t carry the momentum into Saturday, losing game one 6-2 and game two, 8-2.

Florida Tech broke through in the third inning of game one, scoring both of their runs against Spartans starter David LeBron. Vincenzo Catanza singled and was sacrificed to second by Trent Masih. Grant McKown singled him home and McKown eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by John Sternagel.

Tampa answered in the top of the fourth, scoring three times against Florida Tech starter Tyler Deel. Kevin Santa was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he got to trot home on a home run by Darren Miller. Andrew DiLacqua’s sac fly brought the third run home.

They would score two more runs in the top of the seventh, as Deel was taken out after giving up two singles and a walk. Rhett Willis struck out the first batter he faced but then gave up a bases loaded walk and a single to Miller, giving Tampa a 5-2 lead.

Deel (3-4) got through 6.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out two. On the other side, LeBron allowed just three more hits to the Panthers and got through eight innings, before giving way to Cody Martin. He gave up one earned run and struck out seven, before leaving with a 6-2 lead. LeBron improved to 5-0.

McKown finished the day 3-for-4, and was the only Panther to have a multi-hit game. Vin Cosenzo was 3-for-4 for Tampa, while Miller finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and DiLacqua went a perfect 3-for-3.

The Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, against Florida Tech starter Andy Marzheuser. J.D. Osborne and Cosenzo had RBI singles. Florida Tech got a run back in the bottom of the frame, when Sternagel, who doubled earlier in the inning, against Tampa starter
Christian Calleja, came home an RBI single by Daniel Szpik.

Tampa (23-8, 10-2 SSC) scored a run in the fifth on a Laz Rivera RBI single and they put the game away in the sixth, scoring three more runs. Sam Crocker, who took over for Marzheuser in the fourth, threw two passed balls in that sixth inning and had an error behind him. He gave way to Justin Barney, who have up an RBI single, but got the last two outs. It was 6-1 at that point.

Calleja backed up LeBron’s eight inning performance in game one, with seven strong innings of his own in game two. He allowed two runs on five hits, improving to 3-0 on the year. He walked one and struck out two.

Tampa got a single run in the seventh and Florida Tech scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Nick Capra tripled and scored on a David Wilson ground out. The Spartans got that run back in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Chris Gaffney.

Sternagel was the only Florida Tech player to get two hits in the second game. He finished 2-for-4.
