The Saint Leo Lions (34-7, 15-3 SSC) finished off a mid-week series sweep of the Florida Tech Panthers on Thursday at Nancy Bottge Field, with an 11-0 victory in five innings. This follows Wednesday’s doubleheader victory, that saw the Lions win 11-3 and 7-0.

Saint Leo starter Stephanie Adkins (19-3) held the Panthers to five hits in her five-inning complete-game.

Florida Tech starter Rachel Pence (14-13) sent the first six Lions down in order, before running into trouble in the third. Michelle George singled to start the inning and Alyssa Wash followed with a bunt in front of the plate. She was safe at first and with no one covering third, George was safe there on a heads-up play. A stolen base by Wash gave the Lions runners at second and third.

After Pence struck out Sommer Pollard, she walked Kacie Kelly intentionally. Bailey McKenna struck out and it looked like Pence may get out of the inning. Ciera Schumaker had other ideas, as she laced a ball to center field that fell just out of the reach of Rachel Kraak, clearing the bases. A Samantha Ohmie single made it 4-0.

Schumaker was at it again in the fourth, with a two-run single, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead. That was the end of the day for Pence, who gave way to Amanda Kahn in the circle. She was able to get the final out of the inning.
Pence pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. She walked two and struck out four.

Things went south for Kahn in the fifth, but it was not all her own doing. Brittany Creamer singled to start the inning and Danielle Bottley worked a walk. George then laid down a bunt, that was picked up By Vanessa Rubio. Her throw to first hit George and two runs came home on the play. A double by Wash made it 9-0 and Kelly had an RBI double of her own, ending the day for Kahn.

Of the five runs that Kahn gave up in the inning, only one was earned. She was replaced by McKenzie Krutsinger, who gave up a double to Sarah Pauscher, capping the scoring for the Lions.

Florida Tech (21-21, 6-9 SSC) put together a bit if a rally in the ninth. Hailey Leonard was hit by a pitch to start the inning. It was the second time she was plunked in the game. Karina Suicava than laced one to third. The throw went to second, but pulled the fielder off the bag and both runners were safe. Alexus Smith then popped one up between first and second and the ball dropped between two Lions, loading the bases.

Makayla Palmer followed with a single and looked to have a sure RBI, but Leonard was thrown out at the plate. Krista Patterson hit one on the infield and the throw came home, nailing Suicava. Rubio struck out to end the game.

That fifth inning pretty much summed up the Panthers day, and beyond that, summed up the series. They will now travel to Auburndale Florida for a weekend series against the Florida Southern Moccasins. Game one will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 1:00 p.m.
