The top of the Panthers order combined to go 9-for-15 on Friday night, leading the Florida Tech baseball team to a 10-2 conference victory over the Barry Buccaneers in the series opener. Reid Neal capped the game with a grand slam in the top of the ninth.

The Panthers (19-13, 5-5 SSC) pounded out 16 hits and got a good performance from starting pitcher Ty Cohen, who went six innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. He threw 104 pitches, striking out four and walking one.

Florida Tech got on the board first in the top of the second, against Barry starter Jonathan Hernandez. Nick Capra led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. He came home one out later on a Ryan Sinzenich sacrifice fly.

Barry (16-20, 3-7 SSC) matched that run in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI double by Alexis Monge. The tie didn’t last long, as the Panthers took the lead for good in the top of the third. Neal walked, followed by consecutive singles by Daniel Szpik and Capra, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead. Szpik would later score on a passed ball.

Barry got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, to cut the deficit to 3-2, but that was as close as they would get, as the Panthers posted two more in the fifth. David Wilson singled and an error allowed Capra and John Sternagel to score, giving the Panthers a 5-2 lead.

A Sternagel RBI single made it 6-2 in the eighth and the Neal slam came with two outs in the ninth, against Barry reliever Blaine Duncan. Sinzenich, who walked with one out scored ahead of Trent Masih and Grant McKown, who hit back-to-back singles.

Brett Porter pitched a scoreless ninth, behind Luke Lorah, who pitched two innings. Each reliever gave up one hit.

McKown, Neal and Sternagel all went 3-for-5, while Capra and Masih each had two hits.

The series wraps up Saturday, with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
