Florida Tech Celebrates Athletes With Annual Awards Banquet

The Clemente Center was the place to be Monday night; as coaches, athletes and administrators gathered to celebrate another great season of Florida Tech sports in 2016-2017.

A highlight video started things off, showing highlight-reel moments from each of Florida Tech’s 22 sports programs. The Panthers also took time to recognize an exceptional group of kids involved with their Team Impact program, with those kids in attendance.

Athletes who were on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll were recognized, along with seniors from each team. Women’s Soccer took home the Panther Cup, with softball finishing second.

There were two Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners this year, with Manny Abad from the football team and Daniel Schultz of men's cross country sharing the honor. The Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year was Jenna Schaffer of the volleyball team.

Men’s Cross Country earned the team GPA Award, for the fifth year in a row, posting a 3.576 cumulative average. Women’s tennis represented well, with a 3.535 average to take the award home on the women’s side of the ledger.

Aubri Williamson from women’s soccer and Reid Neal from the baseball team earned comeback player of the year awards, while the Andy Seminick Sportsmanship Award went men's track and field's Terence Brookins. Softball player Audrey Gangloff was honored with the Martha Work Sportsmanship Award.

Robert Booth, representing Men’s basketball and now a member of the football team as well, was presented with the Athletic Director’s Leadership Award. Robert is President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is involved with Team Impact, among other programs.

Scholar-Athletes of the year and the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for each team were also recognized. The Athletes of the year included:

Baseball: Drew Beyer
Men’s Golf: Shanren Brienen
Men’s Tennis: Aria Canadell
Men’s Rowing: Kevin Coyle
Men’s Basketball: Sam Daniel
Men’s Swimming: Victor Rocha Furtado
Football: Kenny Johnston
Men’s Cross Country: Tucker Melles
Men’s Track & Field: Joshua Norville
Men’s Soccer: Sam Sawyer
Men’s Lacrosse: Nick Wynne
Women’s Soccer: Eva Banton
Women’s Track & Field: Maia Carter
Women’s Swimming: Valentina Carvajal
Women’s Cross Country: Marina DeBiasi
Volleyball: Olivia Hersey
Women’s Golf: Brittany LaPadula
Women’s Lacrosse: Allie Modica
Women’s Rowing: Federica Pala
Cheerleading: Marina Rogers
Softball: Alexus Smith
Women’s Tennis: Lauren Stuckey
Women’s Basketball: DeLise Williams

With a video board countdown for each, the final award of the night was revealed. The Male Athlete of the Year was presented to Victor Rocha Furtado, who was a member of the national championship winning 200-freestyle relay team. It was the first national title in team history.

Allie Modica from women’s lacrosse won the Female Athlete of the Year award. She has been a huge reason for the Panthers 11-2 record so far, the best in the early history of the program. She is a member of a very exclusive club, hitting the century mark in goals, assists, ground balls and draw controls. She isn’t done. The Panthers have one regular season game left and hopefully a deep postseason run.

Congratulations to all the winners from Monday’s festivities. The Sports Lowdown staff was honored to be a part of it.
