Starting pitcher Lexie Storrer retired 20 of 23 Florida Tech
batters on Friday, leading the Nova Southeastern Sharks to a 2-0 Sunshine State
Conference win at Nancy Bottge Field.
The Sharks (20-17) got on the board immediately, with a leadoff home
run from Dana Edmundson, against Panthers starter Rachel Pence. Edmundson showed why she leads the team in hitting, sending
one off the top of the right field wall that bounced over, giving the visitors
a 1-0 lead.
An error and singles from Storrer and Alex Suzuki led to the
Sharks second run and that was more than enough on this day.
On the mound Storrer allowed one hit in her complete-game
effort, giving up a single to Krista
Patterson in the fourth inning. Hailey
Leonard walked in the bottom of the first, but was erased on a caught
stealing. The only other baserunner the Panthers had was Kaitlin Buchholz, who reached on an
error in the fifth.
Karina Suicava appeared
to beat out an infield single to start the sixth inning, but she was rung up by
the base umpire. The play didn’t even look close, as Suicava appeared to be
past the bag as the throw got to the bag, but the ump didn’t see it that way.
Pence (12-11) went the distance for Florida Tech, working
out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the sixth inning. She pitched well, aside
from that first inning. Nova did get eight hits against her, but Pence walked
only two, while striking out nine.
Storrer walked one and struck out five in her one hit performance.
She improved to 14-7 on the season.
