For the second consecutive day, the Florida Tech Panthers used late inning heroics to beat the visitors from Lynn University. The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth Saturday, sending them to a 4-3 come-from-behind win in game one of a doubleheader.

Ryan Sinzenich singled to right field in the bottom of the ninth, plating pinch-runner Raul Quintero with the winning run. This just hours after the Panthers came from behind to win 8-5 on Friday night, in game one of the series.

It was a pitchers’ duel early, as Panthers hurler Tyler Deel and Lynn starter Frank Grandinette made it hard on the offenses for the early part of the game. Deel retired 13 of the first 14 he faced, allowing a home run to Karl Ellison in the second inning.

Grant McKown got the first hit for the Panthers to start the bottom of the fourth, but he was erased when Reid Neal hit into a double play. Ellison started Lynn’s half of the fifth with a double and scored on an error by Trent Masih, giving the Fighting Knights a 2-0 lead. Deel induced a double play grounder off the bat of Willie Seay, to escape further damage.

Daniel Szpik got the Panthers on the board in the bottom of the fifth when he jacked one over the left field fence, leading off the inning. Nick Capra then drew a walk, but was left stranded at second.

Lynn (20-9) threatened again in the top of the sixth, with two singles and a hit by pitch loading the bases. That brought Tyler Curtis to the plate and with two strikes on him, he appeared to call timeout, which was never granted at home plate. Deel threw the pitch and it was right there for strike three, ending the inning. Lynn head coach Rudy Garbalosa argued, but to no avail.

The visitors did extend their lead in the top of the eighth. Grant Willcoxon started the inning in relief of Deel. He faced three batters, walking one and allowing a single. Justin Barney took over for him and gave up an RBI single to Curtis, making it a 3-1 game.

Florida Tech (16-11) got that run back in the bottom of the eighth. Sinzenich doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a grounder by Kevin Capella. He came home an RBI ground out by Pedro Rivera, closing the gap to 3-2.

In the top of the ninth, D.J. Daniels and Patrick Dorrian singled, but Barney got Miguel Ceballos to strike out, ending the inning and setting up a very exciting bottom of the ninth.

John Sternagel, who hit two home runs on Friday, just missed another to start the ninth. The ball was high in the air and Daniels lost it in the sun, as it hit high off the wall in center. Sternagel made it to third base and it was scored an error on Daniels. Capra drew a walk one out later and was lifted for Quintero.

David Wilson, who has been very good at moving runners with his sacrifice bunting ability did it again, scoring Sternagel with the tying run. The bunt was misplayed, allowing Wilson to reach as well. That set up Sinzenich, who came through with the game-winning single off Grandinette.

Offensively, McKown, Szpik and all went 2-for-4. The only other hit came from Masih.
