Florida Tech fell one run short at Palm Beach Atlantic Friday night, losing 5-4 in a regional baseball matchup at Rubin Park, in West Palm Beach. Panthers starter Ty Cohen took the loss, giving up five runs on 10 hits, in five innings of work.

Reid Neal, Grant McKown, Ryan Sinzenich and Trent Masih all had two hits for the Panthers in the losing cause. The Sailfish were led by Sean Visconti, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

PBA (16-9) landed the first blows, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Jake Summy reached on a Neal error, getting all the way to second base. After a Visconti single, Andrew Calderone chased Summy home with the first run and a Peter Rivera RBI single made it 2-0.

After leaving three on base in the top of the first, the Panthers were held in check by Sailfish pitcher Josh Turner, until the top of the fifth. James Gronberg walked and stole second. Masih then dropped down a bunt, Turner fielded and threw the ball away, allowing Gronberg to score and Masih to get all the way to third.

John Sternagel’s sac fly made it 2-2 and Neal and McKown followed with back-to-back singles. One out later, Sinzenich plated Neal with a single, giving the Panthers a 3-2 lead. That was the end of the night for Turner, who gave way to Kyle Polaski, after 4.2 innings of work. Polaski got the final out of the inning, before Florida Tech could do anymore damage.

The lead didn’t last long, as Cohen (2-3) found immediate trouble in the fifth. Visconti singled and came around on a double by Kyle Simon, tying the game at three. Ryan Johnson’s two-run double made it 5-3. Cohen made it out of the inning, but was done after the frame. He struck out five and walked one, throwing 92 pitches.

The Panthers (13-9) got one run back in the top of the eighth. Daniel Szpik singled and scored one out later on a Nick Capra double. Joey Hennessey took over for Polaski on the mound and got through the eighth.

The Panthers threatened again in the ninth, but Sternagel hit into a double play and McKown flied out to end the game. With that, Hennessey picked up his fifth save.

The series wraps up Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
