The Florida Tech Panthers scored seven runs in the fifth inning Saturday and hung on for a 10-6 win over Palm Beach Atlantic, in game one of a doubleheader. Game two did not fall the Panthers way, as they fell by the score of 4-3.

The Sailfish used six pitchers in game one, trying to slow down a Florida Tech offense that got off to a quick start. John Sternagel doubled against Palm Beach Atlantic starter Tyler Hawks. He was sacrificed to third by Kevin Capella and scored on a ground out by Reid Neal.

PBA answered, scoring a run off Panthers starter Tyler Deel. Sean Visconti hit into a double play, but Evan Dougherty scored, tying the game. PBA grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third, when Visconti doubled home Dougherty.

The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when Florida Tech exploded for seven runs. Sternagel singled and later scored on a Grant McKown base hit, tying the game at two. Christian Denton then took over for Hawks on the mound.

A bases loaded walk to Daniel Szpik made it 3-2 and Ryan Sinzenich came through with a three-run double down the line in right, making it a 6-2 game. After Nick Capra walked, Kevin Fry, the third Sailfish pitcher of the inning, entered. He walked David Wilson, loading the bases again and Trent Masih drove in two, with a single. That made it 8-2 in favor of Florida Tech. When all was said, and done, the Panthers scored seven runs on five hits.

Florida Tech continued to pour it on, picking up two more runs in the sixth inning. Wilson drew a bases loaded walk and Masih was hit by a pitch, giving the Panthers a 10-2 lead.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, all started when McKown committed an error at first to start the inning. Three hits and an RBI ground out, made it a 10-5 game. The Sailfish scored their final run in the seventh.

Deel (3-3) pitched six innings and giving up two earned runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out four. Colin Cristello gave up an unearned run in 0.2 innings of work and Justin Barney pitched the final 2.1, allowing one hit and striking out two.

The Panthers were led offensively by Sternagel, who went 3-for-6, with two runs scored. McKown had two of the Panthers 10 hits.

In game two, Sean Horner pitched eight strong innings for Palm Beach Atlantic, as he was locked in a pretty good pitcher’s duel with Florida Tech starter Andy Marzheuser, who went six innings.

Florida Tech (14-10) got on the board in the top of the second. Capella and Pedro Rivera hit consecutive singles to start the inning and Zac Orchard bunted one back to Horner, who threw the ball away, loading the bases. A balk was called on Horner allowing the first run to score and Sternagel’s fielder’s choice made it 2-0.

Palm Beach Atlantic (17-10) got one back in the bottom of the third on Visconti’s RBI single. They took the lead for good in the sixth inning, striking for three runs. Visconti led off with a single and went to third on a Peter Rivera double. They both got to take the slow trot the rest of the way, thanks to Andrew Calderone, who sent a big fly over left field wall, putting the home team up 4-2.

The Panthers made it interesting in the top of the seventh, thanks to Sternagel’s sac fly, but that was as close as they would get.

Neal (2-for-4) and Szpik (2-for-4) had four of the Panthers six hits. On the mound, Marzheuser gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out eight. He did not walk a batter. Brett Porter and Drew Beyer pitched one inning each for the Panthers.

These two teams will meet again Tuesday night, on the campus of Florida Tech. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
