Panthers Softball Swept by Shorter

Florida Tech took their road show to Rome, GA on Wednesday, for a doubleheader against the Shorter Hawks. The 12-game road trip did not end well for the Panthers, who lost game one 6-5 and game two, 7-0.

Things got off to a rough start for the Panthers in game one, as Shorter scored four unearned runs against starter Amanda Kahn (3-4) in the bottom of the first. The Hawks took advantage of two errors in the frame.

Tiffany Holland singled to start the game and Maddie Hunt reached on an error. Ericka Bynum, who had a heck of a day at the plate, singled and Holland held at third, but scored on another error. Peyton Barthel’s RBI ground out made it 2-0 and an RBI single by Taylor Martin made it 3-0. The Hawks capped the inning with an RBI double off the bat of Hailey Baswell.

That was the end of the day for Kahn, who was lifted after two-thirds of an inning. She allowed five hits, but no earned runs, facing just eight batters. McKenzie Krutsinger came on to record the final out.

Shorter added a run in the third on a Dani Lukas home run, giving them a 5-0 lead. The Panthers answered with a long ball of their own in the top of the fourth, against Shorter starter Payton Lippert. After Krista Patterson was hit by a pitch, Vanessa Rubio took one over the wall, closing the gap to 5-2.

Kameron Carter got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth when she doubled Bynum home. Bynum singled earlier in the inning. That would prove to be a huge run, because the Panthers made it interesting in the top of the seventh.

Kaitlin Buchholz walked, but two straight fielder’s choice grounders resulted in two outs. Patterson kept the inning alive with a double, putting runners at first and third. Rubio was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Shorter went to the bullpen, bringing Kalei Clark in.

Lippert (6-3) gave up five runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. She walked one and struck out four.
Leonard greeted Clark with a single through the left side, scoring two and making it a 6-5 game.

Makayla Palmer came up with a chance to tie the game, but popped out to end the game. Clark earned the save.

Krutsinger pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. She walked one and struck out three.

Game two was all about Bynum. She had two 2-run doubles, including one in the first inning, as part of a three-run frame against Panthers starter Amanda Kahn. Her second one came in the third inning, giving the Hawks a 5-0 lead.

Bynum, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game one, finished her big day in the fifth, taking Pence deep and giving the Hawks a 6-0 lead. She finished game two 3-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs.

The Panthers (11-14) managed just two hits in game two Hannah Draper. She walked one and struck out two.

Pence (8-8) just didn’t have it and gave way to Kahn after five innings of work.  She allowed six earned runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out two.
Kahn allowed the final run of the game in the sixth, giving up a single to pinch-hitter Ashley Langel.
