Reigning Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week Logan Browning pitched six strong innings Friday night, striking out nine Florida Tech Panthers and leading the visiting Florida Southern Moccasins to a 3-0 win at Andy Seminck-Les Hall Field.

Browning, the son of former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Tom Browning, allowed five hits and struck out 10. He got the key out he needed at key times, keeping the Panthers off the board.

Florida Southern (12-6, 1-3 SSC) got on the board early, scoring a run in the first against Panthers starter Ty Cohen.  With one out, Cody Burgess singled and stole second. He later scored on a Jason Sierra single.

The Mocs got a single from Austin Mauer to start the second, but Cohen got Kevin Fuller to line into a double play. That was key at the time, because Christian Maglich hit a long solo blast, putting the visitors up 2-0.

The Panthers (13-6, 0-1 SSC) got off to a good start in the bottom of the second when Daniel Szpik walked, but he was erased on a double play. Nick Capra would then single, but a David Wilson strikeout ended the inning. They would threaten again in the third when James Gronberg led off with a double off the wall. John Sternagel walked one out later, but those runners would be stranded.

Florida Southern would strand two runners of their own in the top of the fourth, as Cohen came up with a huge strikeout of Burgess, with runners on second and third. Browning answered in the bottom of the frame, when he whiffed Gronberg with runners on first and second.

The Mocs would score an insurance run in the top of the ninth, against Panthers reliever Justin Barney. He hit Mauer and Maglich, who moved up on a Vaun Brown ground out. With Burgess at the plate, the plan was to intentionally walk him. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Barney threw one away from catcher Ryan Sinzenich, who was unable to save it, bringing in the third run.

Florida Southern closer Cameron Hanes came on to close the door and he did just that, striking out the side, to end the contest.

The Panthers were held to five hits, two of them off the bat of Capra. Wilson, Gronberg and Pedro Rivera had the other three. Florida Tech left nine on base, while Florida Southern left seven.

The series continues Saturday, with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
