Panthers Losing Streak Reaches Seven
The Embry-Riddle Eagles swept a doubleheader from Florida
Tech on Saturday, with a 4-3 game one win and a 6-1 win in game two. It was the
third straight win for the Eagles, who beat Florida Tech in the series opener on Friday.
With the Eagles being a provisional member of the Sunshine
State Conference, the victories count in the overall standings, but they do not
count against Florida Tech as conference losses., That may be the only silver
lining the Panthers can take away from the weekend.
Errors hurt the Panthers in Friday’s game and they committed
three more in game one on Saturday. Two of those led to Embry-Riddle scoring
twice against Panthers starter Rachel
Pence in the top of the first.
Anna Battison singled and went to second on a throwing
error. After a walk, Maggie Scott reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing Kendall
Funk to the plate. She lifted a fly ball to left that resulted in an error and
allowed both runs to score.
Florida Tech put together a two-out rally in the fourth,
getting one run back. Krista Patterson
singled and Vanessa Rubio was hit by
a Kassidy Simons pitch. Makayla Palmer
then stroked a single right back through the middle, cutting the Eagles lead to
2-1.
Embry-Riddle got that run back in the fifth on a Simons RBI
double. Pence got the final two outs of the inning, but the Panthers were down
3-1.
FIT rallied in the sixth with an error, a walk and a
Patterson single loading the bases. Rubio drew an RBI walk and Palmer drove in
her second run of the day with a single, making it 3-3. After Julianna Goldberg’s
fielder’s choice resulted in an out at the plate, Audrey Gangloff and Kaitlin
Buchholz were both struck out and just like that, the potential big inning went
down in flames.
Those stranded runners in the sixth proved costly, as did
another error in the bottom of the seventh. Eryn Chester led off with a single
and Battison laid down a sacrifice bunt to first. Hailey Leonard fielded it,
but threw the ball away, allowing the winning run to score.
The end result was a tough luck loss for Pence, whose record
fell to 7-6. She pitched six innings, allowing just one earned run, walking
three and striking out one. She threw 81 pitches.

In game two, the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the
top of the second, thanks to a Goldberg home run. That was the only run
Embry-Riddle starter Illona Andringa, who was Friday’s winning pitcher and she
picked up a win in game one on Saturday in relief. She made it a perfect
weekend, getting the win in game two as well.
That lead held until the fifth, when Scott had an RBI single
off Panthers starter Amanda Kahn and
an infield single from Funk allowed Simons to score, making it a 2-1 game.
Kahn (3-3) lasted 4.1 innings, giving way to McKenzie
Krutsinger after the Scott RBI single. She allowed two runs on seven hits,
walked one and struck out two.
Embry-Riddle put the game away in the sixth, scoring four
runs against reliever McKenzie Krutsinger, who gave up a bases loaded triple to
Funk, making it a 6-1 game.
