After taking two of three games over the weekend at home, the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish got another win over Florida Tech on Tuesday, beating the Panthers 7-1, at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.

Tuesday’s game was a regional matchup, but it was a game the Panthers needed to win, after dropping the weekend series. Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t put much together, getting just four hits against Sailfish pitching.

The Panthers (14-11) had chances, with the Sailfish hurlers giving up 11 free passes. The problem for the Panthers was that they couldn’t push any of them across, leaving 13 on base.

Florida Tech starter Grant Willcoxon had an up and down night over his five innings of work. He gave up seven hits and struck out seven, with only one of his three runs being earned.

The first two runs he allowed in the second inning, were unearned, thanks to a fielding error by Grant McKown on a ball hit by former Panther, Andrew Calderone. After he moved to third on a wild pitch, an Eddie Vicinanza brought him home. Vicinanza would later score on a single by Evan Dougherty.

David Wilson got one run back in the bottom of the second, with a long home run. He also had a double in the bottom of the sixth, giving him two of the Panthers four hits.

The Sailfish (18-10) added a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Jake Summey and tacked on three more in the seventh on RBI singles by Kyle Simon, Calderone and Vicinanza.

Two of the runs were charged to Panthers reliever Sam Crocker, who was hit by a liner back at him. He spun out of the way and it appeared to hit him in the back. After throwing four pitches, coach Greg Berkemeier decided to take him out.

Jake Lane gave up the final run in the ninth, on another Summey RBI single. John Sternagel and Daniel Szpik earned walks in the ninth, but the Panthers couldn’t capitalize.

Injury update: Per Florida Tech play-by-play voice J.C. Meyerholz, Panthers outfielder James Gronberg broke his hand in the weekend series and will be out indefinitely.

The Panthers host Lynn in a three-game weekend series, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at noon.
