Barry Takes Game One of Doubleheader in Extra Innings
Lynsey Duncan spoiled a valiant Florida Tech comeback in game one of Saturday’s Sunshine State Conference showdown, as she laced a game-winning two-run single back up the middle, sending the Barry Buccaneers to a 7-5 win over Florida Tech.
The loss was especially disheartening for the Panthers, who
came from 4-1 down and 5-4 down, to force extra innings, only to have it slip
away in the ninth. Rachel Pence took
the loss, falling to 8-9, despite her complete-game effort.
The scoring started in the top of the third, with Cheyanne
head hitting a one out triple to right field. The throw back in was off target,
allowing Head to score.
Florida Tech (11-16) got the run back in the bottom of the
inning. Krista Patterson drew a one
out walk and later scored on a single by Makayla
Palmer, on a 3-2 pitch out of the hand of Barry starter Christie Falcon.
The tie didn’t last long, with Barry getting singles by
Kristina Osorio and Maddy VonHagel, followed by a run-scoring double off the
bat of Avery Cotterill, giving the Buccaneers a 2-1 lead. An error on a ball
hit to short by Catie Falcon, the twin sister of Christie, made it 3-1. It
probably could have been an even bigger inning, but Cotterill was later picked
off at third.
The Panthers stranded two runners in their half of the
fourth, only to see Osorio take Pence out of the park in the top of the sixth,
to boost the Barry lead to 4-1.
FIT answered in the bottom of the frame, thanks to
a long blast off the bat of Julianna
Goldberg, cutting the deficit in half, 4-2. That home run prompted a
pitching change for Barry, as Geneva Santos, who was the winning
pitcher in Friday’s opener, made her way into the circle.
After the Buccaneers went down in order in the top of the
seventh, Santos started the bottom of the inning with walks to Karina Suicava and Alexus Smith. Santos rebounded, getting Patterson and Hailey
Leonard to hit consecutive fielder’s choice grounders, both resulting in outs
at third base.
Down to the final out, Palmer kept the game alive with a
walk and Goldberg’s 2-run single back through the box, knotted things up at
four. Vanessa Rubio then hit a line drive to short, that was snared by Head,
just before it hit the ground.
Barry (8-14) would re-take the lead in the top of the eighth. An
infield single by Alayna Gallagher and a single by Jasmine Harris, brought
VonHagel to the plate and her single to left, scored the go-ahead run, making
it a 5-4 game.
To Florida Tech’s credit, they weren’t done. Amanda Kahn, who is primarily used as a
starting pitcher was brought on to pinch hit, getting just her third at bat of
the season. She drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Audrey Gangloff.
Santos would get the next two outs, before issuing a walk to
Smith, putting runners at first and second. Patterson would come through with a
sharp single up the middle, tying the game once more.
Unfortunately, after a single by Catie Falcon, started the
ninth, Head would come back to haunt the Panthers again in the with a one out
single to right. She would later steal second, before Gallagher popped up, for
out number two. Duncan then ripped one back up the middle, plating the two runs
that would decide the game.
Florida Tech got a runner to second in the bottom of the
ninth, with Palmer drawing a walk and moving to second on a sacrifice, but
Santos got Gangloff swinging, to end the game.

Pence threw 129 pitches, giving up seven runs (five earned)
on 14 hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter. Santos pitched two
innings in relief of Christie Falcon, but gave way to Anieliese Palmeiro, who
pitched the final two innings and picked up her second win of the season.
Goldberg was the Panthers leading hitter, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Smith Patterson, Palmer and Vanessa Rubio had the other four hits on the day.
