Tampa Sweeps Doubleheader Against Panthers

Following a loss on Friday in game one of the series, the Florida Tech softball team looked for revenge Saturday in a doubleheader against the Tampa Spartans. Unfortunately, the home team had other ideas, as they swept the Panthers 3-2 and 6-1.

Game one took nine innings to decide a winner, with Tampa scoring in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a Shelby Press RBI single.

Florida Tech (10-8, 0-3 SSC) struck first in game one against Tampa starter Corynn Miner. Vanessa Rubio reached on a fielder’s choice and came home on a Hailey Leonard double. After Makayla Palmer walked, Rachel Kraak singled home Leonard, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Audrey Gangloff walked, loading the bases, but Kaitlin Buchholz flied out to end the inning.

Rachel Pence got the start for Florida Tech and like Miner, ran into early trouble. Taylor Farrell singled with one out and was chased home on a triple by Bre Setree. A sac fly by Makaleigh Dooley, tied things up at two.

It was a pitcher’s duel from there, with neither team putting together a big threat until Tampa finally broke through in the ninth. Miner walked and Elly Pillers and Jennie Sittloh followed with bunt base hits, loading the bases. That ended the day for Pence.

She pitched 8+ innings, giving up three earned runs on nine hits. She walked one and struck out two, before being replaced by Amanda Kahn. Kahn got an out on a fielder’s choice, but gave up the Press single.

Miner went the distance, allowing two runs and three hits to the Panthers. She walked five, while striking out four.

Kahn (3-2) got the start in game two for the Panthers, but she couldn’t solve Tampa, who scored four runs in the third inning. Press singled and scored on an error. The inning was highlighted by three doubles for the Spartans. Only one of the runs were earned.

Tampa (11-2, 5-1 SSC) would get single runs in the fifth and sixth, before the Panthers broke up the shutout with a sac fly by Buchholz. That was the only blemish against Dooley, who pitched 6.1 innings, picking up her sixth win of the season.

Kahn pitched four innings for the Panthers, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter, before giving way to McKenzie Krutsinger for the final two innings. She gave up four hits and two runs.

The Panthers long road trip continues Friday at Embry-Riddle. That game gets underway at 6:00 p.m. The series will continue Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
