Saint Leo Shoots Lights Out Against Panthers

The Saint Leo Lions had an amazing shooting night on Saturday, beating the Florida Tech Panthers 97-76 in a Sunshine State Conference Men’s basketball clash.

Saint Leo had five guys in double figures, led by Antoine Tobias, who dropped in 26. Marcus Dewberry recorded a double-double with 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, Justin Satchell and Tyreece Brice had 15 and Junior Searcy added 11.

Sam Daniel led the Panthers with 19, Jordan Majors had 14, Patrick Anderson 12 and Robert Booth added 10.

The Lions (12-12, 6-8 SSC) got off to one of the hottest starts you will ever see in a basketball game, but Majors hit a couple three’s early, keeping the Panthers in it, 17-13. It wasn’t close for long, as the Lions hit 6-of-8 from three and Tobias had 11 points, many of those assisted by Dewberry, who had seven with 7:32 left in the half.

They extended their lead to 42-31 with 4:01 left and extended their lead to 52-35 at the half. The home team was 20-of-27 from the field (74.1 percent), including 10-of-14 from long distance (71.4 percent). Florida Tech struggled behind the arc, hitting 4-of-12, but they were respectable from the field, hitting 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from the field.

Saint Leo won the rebounding battle in the first half, 18-10, including 15-4 on the defensive end. They also led in assists, 17-7. Dewberry got his double-double early in the second half.

Saint Leo struggled a bit in the second half from three-point range, but by the final media timeout the worst shooting percentage by any of the Lions was Satchell, who was shooting 60 percent (6-for-10).

This was one of the most lopsided games the Panthers were involved in all season. The last lead they held in this game was 5-2, with 18:37 to go in the first half. It was just one of those nights you should tip your hat to the opponent.

The Panthers (12-12, 5-10 SSC) will look to rebound against Lynn on Wednesday night at the Clemente Center. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
