Panthers Split Saturday Twin Bill in Mississippi

After two come-from-behind victories on Friday against Mississippi College, the Florida Tech baseball team was back at it Saturday, taking one of two games and improving to 3-1 overall in 2017.

The Panthers rolled to an 11-2 triumph in game one, keeping the Choctaws offense in check until the bottom of the ninth inning. Game two was won by the home team, 9-4.

Florida Tech hurler Tyler Deel came out firing in game one, allowing four hits and striking out seven, in seven innings of work. Grant Willcoxon pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and two runs, with only one being earned. It didn’t matter at that point, because the Panthers offense had already put the game away.

James Gronberg started the scoring in the top of the fourth. He reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Daniel Szpik, who singled earlier, to score. Gronberg later stole second and scored on a Nick Capra ground out, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Capra, who drove in the winning run in game two on Friday, drove in two runs in this game and drew two walks.

The Panthers added to their lead in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits. Reid Neal, Szpik and Gronberg all had RBI singles, with Gronberg driving in two with his hit. They ended the inning up, 6-0.

David Wilson added an RBI single in the seventh inning, making it 7-0 and he later capped the Panthers scoring in the ninth inning with a three-run homer.

The Choctaws two runs came in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.

In game two, Mississippi College scored seven runs in the fourth inning, six against Panthers starter Rhett Willis. Of the six runs, only three were earned. Willis allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one over 3.2 innings.

Zac Orchard got the Panthers on the board in the sixth inning with a two-run single and a two-run double by John Sternagel in the ninth, made it 9-4.

The Panthers will open their home season on Friday against the Lincoln Memorial RailSplitters at 6:00 p.m. The series will continue Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for noon.
