Panthers Pummel Stonehill

The Florida Tech softball team sent 15 batters to the plate in the fourth inning Saturday, scoring 11 runs in the frame and beating Stonehill 14-3, in a game that went four and a half innings before being called. Amanda Kahn pitched four innings, to secure the win.

The Panthers (9-3) pounded out 11 hits in the romp, led by Karina Suicava who went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Makayla Palmer drove in three runs as well.

Suicava got things started in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded single off Skyhawks starter Jennifer Mayette. Rachel Kraak, Audrey Gangloff and Alexus Smith all had hits in the inning. A wild pitch scored Smith with the third run of the inning.

Stonehill (0-3) got two runs back in the top of the third inning, both unearned against Kahn. Erin Brayden drove the runs in with a single. Taylor Whaley followed that with a single, but Kraak threw Brayden out at the plate, ending the inning.

The Skyhawks did tie the game in the top of the fourth Carly Rennie and Mayette started the inning with back-to-back singles. Taylor Lester brought Rennie home with a single, tying the game at three.

That tie would not last long, as the Panthers had an inning to remember in their half of the fourth.
Two errors bookended a Suicava double, making it 4-3. After Krista Patterson walked, Hailey Leonard drove in a run, scoring Suicava making it 5-3. With the bases loaded, Palmer roped one to left that went over the fielder’s head, clearing the bases and giving the Panthers an 8-3 lead. That was the end of the day for Mayette, who was replaced in the circle by Katherine Rayner.

Kaitlin Buchholz, who led the inning off reaching on error, had an RBI single her second time up, making it 9-3. Suicava followed with a two-run single and a sac fly by Smith and RBI singles by Patterson and Vanessa Rubio capped the scoring.

With the game in hand, the Panthers took Kahn out of the game, in favor of Rachel Pence who hadn’t worked since last Sunday.

Kahn (3-0) pitched four innings allowing nine hits, with only one of the three runs she gave up being earned. She walked one and did not strike out a batter. Pence ended things in a hurry, getting Stonehill in order, striking out Whaley to end the game.

Florida Tech will wrap up their weekend when they take on Armstrong on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. The Pirates handed the Panthers an 11-7 loss back on February 3, despite a grand slam by Leonard.
