Panthers Pull Off Saturday Softball Sweep

The Florida Tech Panthers got their second win of the day on Saturday, a 3-2 victory over Central Missouri. Rachel Pence, who got the win in game one against Wayne State, picked up her first save of the season in game two.

McKenzie Krutsinger, who hasn’t pitched since opening day, got the start in game two, giving up one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. She struck out one and did not walk a batter and improved her record to 1-1 in the process.

Florida Tech got on the board first in the top of the first, against Central Missouri starter Alexa Bradley. With two outs, Hailey Leonard was hit by a pitch and immediately stole second. Vanessa Rubio then reached on an error. The miscue brought Leonard home. Makayla Palmer followed with a single, chasing Rubio home and giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Central Missouri got in the board in the bottom of the second, thanks to a double by Katie Giacone but the Panthers answered with a run in the top of the third. Leonard and Rubio hit back-to-back doubles and that was the end of the day for Bradley.

Giacone took over in the circle and immediately gave up a single to Palmer, who proceeded to steal second. She was stranded there and the Panthers failed to pick up an insurance run.

After Krutsinger struck out the first batter she faced in the bottom of the third, she allowed a single. She got the next batter out, but after giving up a single to Hailey Crabtree, she was lifted in favor of Amanda Khan, who like Krutsinger was making her first appearance in the circle since opening day. Khan got the final out on a fielder’s choice, closing the book on Krutsinger.

The Jennies (4-6) closed the gap to one in the bottom of the fifth, when Allie Dishinger doubled home Crabtree and made it a 3-2 game. Khan stranded Dishinger when she got Alex Leonhart to ground out. That would end the day for Khan, who pitched 2.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run. She did not record a strikeout and did not walk a batter.

Pence came on in the sixth to close the door. She walked one and struck out four in her two innings of work.

The Panthers (6-2) have now won six straight games. They will wrap up the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a pair of games against Texas A&M - Commerce and Georgia College at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET.
