Panthers Complete Sweep of Lincoln Memorial

Florida Tech baseball swept a doubleheader from Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, winning game two 9-3. The Panthers, who took game one earlier in the day by a score of 6-4, stroked 12 hits in game two and overcame four errors in the contest.

These two wins, together with Friday’s win in the home opener gave the Panthers a series sweep of the Railsplitters.

Andy Marzheuser got some early run support from his Panther teammates en route to his first win of the season. He pitched five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs, striking out two and walking one. He was backed up by three relievers.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by Grant McKown’s 3-for-4 day. He knocked in a run and scored twice. Reid Neal and Kevin Capella had two hits each.

Florida Tech (6-1) scored twice in the bottom of the first. John Sternagel started the inning with a double off Lincoln Memorial starter Matt Mullenbach (1-0). After Neal walked, the runners both moved up on a passed ball. A walk to McKown loaded the bases and Daniel Szpik drew a walk of his own and picked up an easy RBI. One out later, Zac Orchard’s sac fly gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

The Railsplitters picked up a run in the top of the second when Mason Ewers led off with a double and came around to score on a Tim Wages single. The Panthers would answer with two more runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Panthers added three runs in the bottom of the second. Sternagel grounded out to drive in Erik Molina, who led off the inning with a double. Neal followed with a triple and scored on an error. One batter later, James Gronberg singled, bringing McKown, who reached on an error earlier, home and knocking Mullenbach out of the game and giving the Panthers a 5-1 lead.

Lincoln Memorial (1-6) scored a run in the top of the fifth, making it a three-run game. That was as close as they would get, as the Panthers answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning, thanks to another Railsplitters error.

FIT erased all doubt with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Szpik doubled home McKown for the first run and he would later come across on a passed ball. Gronberg later walked and scored the final run on a wild pitch.

The Panthers have now won three in a row and will look to keep that streak going, when they host Felician College on Wednesday, at 6:00 p.m.
