The Florida Tech women got a huge conference win over defending Sunshine State Conference Champion Nova Southeastern Saturday, erasing an eight-point halftime deficit and leave Fort Lauderdale with a 77-73 victory.

The girls are happy,” said Florida Tech coach John Reynolds, in his post-game interview with Jim Mitchell. “It’s been hard on us with lately with the injuries and the distractions we’ve had. We’re gonna just enjoy this one.”

The victory completed the season sweep for the Panthers against Nova and kept their conference tournament hopes very much alive. The Sharks only have four conference losses this season, with two coming at the hands of Florida Tech.

DeLise Williams led the Panthers with 25 points and Gudlau Juliusdottir added a career-high 19. Both players hit 7-of-11 shots from the field. Julie McCarthy and Markeema Crawford chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Things did not look good for the Panthers early, as Nova went on an 8-0 run and extended it to a 14-2 run in the first quarter. They turned that into a 22-13 lead after 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Panthers stepped up their defense to start, getting an early steal by Aniquah Swan and a block by Tereza Sedlakova, who also pulled down nine rebounds. The offense followed, as they were able to cut the lead to 22-18 to start the quarter. The Panthers continued to battle, tying things up at 26, with 3:14 left in the half.

The Sharks (14-8, 10-4 SSC) bounced back, ending the half in a 9-1 run and taking a 35-27 lead to the locker room.

Nova extended the lead to 10 to start the third and extended it to as many as 11 with 4:29 left, 44-33. Florida Tech made a 7-0 run, cutting it to four, with 1:25 to go in the quarter. After the Sharks got two back on free-throws, the Panthers went back to work, with Markeema Crawford hitting a jumper with one second left in the third, cutting the deficit to 46-44.

McCarthy tied the game 10 seconds into the fourth, with a layup. She was fouled on the play and the free-throw gave her squad a one point lead. Nova came back to take a 52-47 lead, but the Panthers regained the lead moments later, on free throws by Williams.

With the game tied at 55, Williams drained a big three, which started a 9-0 run and gave the Panthers a 66-57 lead with 2:12 left in the game. The Sharks went down swinging, cutting the lead to three with 33.4 seconds left and again with 26 seconds left.

FIT (10-10, 5-8 SSC) stopped the clock with a late foul and Cheray Saunders hit them both, cutting the lead to 75-73. After the Panthers inbounded and took time off the clock, Williams found McCarthy open underneath for an uncontested layup and that iced the game, with six seconds left.

“We won’t take a jump shot there,” said Reynolds. “We’re gonna dribble it around and take time off the clock, but if they’re gonna give you a layup, you gotta take the layup.”

The Panthers will return home Wednesday at 5:30, to take on conference foe Florida Southern at 5:30 p.m.
