Florida Tech Sweeps Choctaws with 8-3 Victory

The Florida Tech Panthers completed a doubleheader sweep of the Mississippi College Choctaws on Friday night, with an 8-3 victory in game two. This victory followed a 6-4 win for the Panthers, earlier in the day.

As they did in game one, the Panthers gave up a lead late, but they came from behind for the second time, scoring six runs in the final two innings and turning a one run deficit into a five-run lead.

Florida Tech scored a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by James Gronberg. The hit scored Grant McKown, who reached on an error to start the inning, against Choctaws starting pitcher Zach Ingram. David Wilson started the fifth inning with a single and later scored on a single off the bat of John Sternagel, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Andy Marzheuser got the start for the Panthers in game two and he pitched 4.1 innings of no-hit baseball, before Colton Johnson got the first hit if the game for the home team. After Johnson stole second and Grant Barber walked, Panthers head coach Greg Berkemeier decided he had seen enough and took Marzheuser out, in favor of Luke Lorah.

Marzheuser walked four and struck out four over his 4.1 innings of work. He threw 81 pitches, 52 for strikes.

Mississippi College (0-2) got one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Hunter Wilson and they tied things up in the seventh, when Colton Johnson scored on a throwing error. That brought an end to the day for Lorah. Colin Cristello took over on the mound and promptly threw a wild pitch, allowing the Choctaws to take a 3-2 lead.

The inning could have been worse, if not for a great play by Gronberg in center. He made a running grab just before the ball hopped off the grass, likely saving two more runs.

Lorah (1-0) allowed three runs on two hits, in 2.1 innings of work. He threw 37 pitches, 26 strikes. The saving grace for him, despite the tough outing, was that he was the pitcher of record when the Panthers offense came alive.

The Panthers (2-0) scored twice in the eighth, highlighted by a pinch-hit double off the bat of Nick Capra, scoring Dan Szpik and Gronberg, helping the Panthers take a 4-3 lead.

Szpik would get a chance to do his own damage in the top of the ninth, as Choctaws reliever Matt Payne intentionally walked McKown to load the bases and face Szpik. He made them pay, as he roped a 2-run single through the hole on the right side, giving the Panthers some insurance, 6-3.

Payne then threw two consecutive wild pitches, scoring Szpik with the seventh run and the Panthers capped the scoring on a fielder’s choice RBI for Capra.

These two teams will play another doubleheader on Saturday, with game one starting at 1:00 p.m. There will be no game Sunday, due to weather concerns.
