FIT Rallies to Victory over Palm Beach Atlantic

After beating Nova Southeastern in the morning game on Saturday, the Florida Tech softball team picked up their second victory of the day in the afternoon, a 7-3 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic in the Florida Tech Marriott First Pitch Classic.

Rachel Pence, who pitched a three-hit shutout against Nova, was back on the mound for game two. Things didn’t start well in the second game, with the Sailfish jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Kayla Knight drew a walk to start the game and Claudia Pizzarelli singled. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and came home on a single by Magnolia West.

Florida Tech (2-2) came right back in the bottom of the inning against PBA pitcher Nikki Brinegar. She walked Krista Patterson and Sarah Hayes to start the game and Hailey Leonard, who hit a grand slam Friday, continued her hot hitting with an RBI single up the middle. She later scored the tying run on a Makayla Palmer ground out.

Palm Beach Atlantic (0-3) came back with a run in the top of the second on an RBI triple by Knight, scoring Noelle McGuire, who singled earlier in the inning. That gave the visitors a 3-2 lead, but it didn’t last long.

FIT knotted things up in the bottom of the fourth, helped by a double steal from Audrey Gangloff and Kaitlin Buchholz. Buchholz later scored on a single by Patterson. One inning later, the Panthers scored what would prove to be the winning run.

Leonard singled to start the frame and Vanessa Rubio was hit by a pitch. Palmer brought Leonard home with a single, giving the Panthers a 4-3 lead. After Julianna Goldberg singled to load the bases, she was lifted for pinch-runner Amanda Kahn

One out later, Buchholz single scored Rubio. Karina Suicava followed with an RBI single, making it 6-3 and Hayes capped the scoring with a single of her own.

With the win, Pence improved to 2-1. She wasn’t as dominant in the afternoon as she was in the morning, but only one of the three runs she allowed was earned. She struck out four, while giving up eight hits.

The Panthers wrap up a busy weekend on Sunday, with a rematch against Angelo State at 2:00 p.m. The Panthers lost the first meeting on Friday, 12-0.
