Bombs Away: Barry Trounces Florida Tech

Wednesday was a night the Florida Tech Panthers men’s basketball team would like to forget. The Barry Buccaneers put on a clinic from beyond the arc, going 19-for-38 for the game and outgunning the Panthers 103-78. The win improved Barry's home record to 12-0.

Last week Florida Tech coach Billy Mims said Barry would be their toughest game of the season and he was correct. The Buccaneers were number one in the region and the number one ranked team in the Sunshine State Conference, going into Wednesday’s game and by the end, they left no doubt.

At one point in the contest, the with the Buccaneers up 65-39, Barry had 36 points just on three-pointers, while the Panthers had scored 39 for the game.

“They have a lot of great shooters and got looks that other people wouldn’t make against us,” said Mims, in his post-game interview with Jerry Durney. “They looked like the Golden State Warriors. At one point, I thought Steph Curry and Klay Thompson were out there.”

Patrick Anderson hit a game-tying three with 28 seconds having elapsed in the contest, tying the game at three. That was the last time the Panthers were in the ballgame. They did make it a 10-9 game, but a 7-0 gave the Bucs some breathing room.

The Bucs (16-2, 9-2 SSC) hit six of their 19 threes before 10 minutes were going in the first half. Besides doing damage from downtown, the home team was crashing the boards in a big way, as well. They out rebounded the Panthers 24-7 in the first half and 47-24 for the game.

Sawyer Glick was 6-of-7 from three-point range in the first half for Barry and finished 7-of-8 for the game. He scored 21 points. Arie Williams was 6-of-9 from distance and led the Bucs with 22 points.

“Those were the two best shooters and those are two guys we talked about,” said Mims. “All week we said we gotta stop Williams and Glick and tonight we just didn’t have an answer for them.”

The Panthers cut the game to 11, 42-31 after Jordan Majors hit a three with 5:34 left in the first half. Barry went on an 11-0 run, nine of those 11 were three consecutive threes by Sawyer Glick. All of a sudden, it was 53-31.

“That was pretty much it,” said Mims. “That 11-0 run between the six-minute mark and the three minute mark of the first half that I thought was where Barry actually won the basketball game.

The Panthers did go on a 13-0 run late in the second half, cutting the Barry lead to 86-65 and forcing Barry to bring some of their starters back into the game, but that was the biggest threat the Panthers would mount.

FIT (11-9, 4-7 SSC) had four guys in double figures, led by Jordan Majors 24 points. Anderson had 13, Rafael Casanova had 13 and Sam Daniel had 10. Max Fischer, who came off the bench late, finished with eight points.

The Panthers return home next Wednesday, to take on Eckerd in a key Sunshine State Conference game. The Panthers erased a 15-point deficit at Eckerd early in the season, but need this win even more to keep themselves alive in the conference. The game will tip off around 7:40 p.m.
