The Florida Tech women’s basketball team fell to 1-6 away from home Wednesday, losing to Barry, 66-61 in Miami Shores. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Buccaneers.

The Panthers (9-9, 3-7 SSC) made a late charge in the contest, as they were down 59-46 with 4:16 left in the contest before making a 10-0 run, capped by a three-point basket by Tereza Sedlakova. Amanda Allen hit a three earlier in the run.

After a couple free-throws by Barry, Kareese Johnson got the Panthers to within three again, 62-59 with 19 seconds left. Barry was able to seal the game from the free-throw line and send Florida Tech home with a tough loss.

“I think we played really hard tonight, just some things didn’t fall our way,” said Florida Tech head coach John Reynolds, in his post-game interview with Jerry Durney. “I’m proud of them, I thought we worked hard.”

Florida Tech scored the first five points of the contest, including a three by DeLise Williams 17 seconds in, but the Buccaneers tied it at five, with the teams trading a couple hoops after that. A three-pointer by Melanie Jordan and a layup at the end of the quarter by Julia Paulin, gave the home team a 17-11 lead.

Three free-throws by Julie McCarthy got the Panthers to within three at 17-14 but Paulin answered with a three and gave Barry a 20-14 lead. The Panthers cut the lead to two twice in the second quarter, but would get no closer as the Bucs closed out the half, leading 33-25.

The half did not end without controversy, as Allen appeared to put a shot up with 0.2 left in the clock, which went in and was originally counted by the officials. After a huddle, the call was overturned and Reynolds voiced his displeasure. He earned a technical foul before heading to the locker room.

“I wanna look at those points they took off the board,” said Reynolds. “From my angle when she shoots the ball, it looks like there is two tenths of a second on the clock, for me it says two tenths and the table agreed, two tenths, so that’s the way it is.”

Barry (5-14, 3-8 SSC) started the second half shooting the technical free-throws and they got the ball, turning it into a 38-25 lead. The Panthers did get the lead down to nine, to start the fourth and then made the run late, before falling just short.

Sedlakova finished with a double-double, including a career-high 19 points. She was 7-of-11 from the field and pulled down 10 boards.

“Terry was without a doubt, our best player on the floor tonight, she came to play,” said Reynolds.

“In the second half, she was dominant, dominant.”

Williams finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while McCarthy and Allen scored seven points each.

Next up for the Panthers is a home meeting with number 23 Eckerd next Wednesday, February 1. “I think they’re the best team in the region,” said Reynolds. “I think they’re the best defensive team for sure. They score a lot of points off that defense.”

The opening tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
