The Florida Tech Women’s team put up a fight against the nationally ranked and undefeated Bellarmine on Sunday, before falling 68-61 in the Palm Beach Atlantic Holiday Hoops Classic. The Panthers were their own worst enemy, hitting only one of 14 three-pointers and turning the ball over 23 times.

Foul-shooting kept the Panthers in this game, as they hit 26-of-29 from the line, in a game that featured a combined 56 fouls and 61 foul shots. Bellarmine finished 23-for-32 from the stripe.

Julie McCarthy led the Panthers with a career-high 25 points and hit 15 of her 17 free throws. She also had 10 rebounds.

Shequana Harris chipped in 18. Sarah Galvin led the Knights with a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 boards. She scored her 1,000th point as a member of the Knights in this contest.

Things started well for the Panthers, who scored the first seven points of the game, but Bellarmine roared back with a 17-0 run and led 22-11 after the first quarter. The Panthers cut into the lead a bit in the second quarter, outscoring Bellarmine 15-13, but there were no big runs in the quarter by either side.

The Knights (9-0) led 35-26 at the half, but the Panthers went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one, after a layup by Gudlau Juliusdottir with 7:38 left, cutting it to a 36-35 lead for the Knights.

A three by Raven Merriweather stopped the Panthers in their tracks and started another run for Bellarmine, that saw the lead balloon to 44-35. The Knights led by as many as 10 and entered the fourth quarter up 53-46.

The Panthers (6-4) kept it close throughout the fourth quarter, closing to within three, 62-59 with 2:55 left and 64-61, 39 seconds later. McCarthy’s two made free throws got Florida Tech to within three points, both times.

Those would be the last points the Panthers would score, as the Knights closed things out with four straight free-throws.

The Panthers will take on Shaw on Monday at 12:30 p.m., as the PBA Holiday Hoops Classic wraps up.
