Panther Women Dominate Warner

Shequana Harris scored 15 points and the Florida Tech Women’s basketball team pulled down 45 rebounds, en route to an 84-40 win over the Warner Royals on Friday.

It was a team effort for the Panthers who had at least one rebound from each of the 14 players that saw action.

“Everybody played and played some extended minutes and everybody had at least one rebound,” said Panthers coach John Reynolds after the game. “It was a good game to get everybody some playing time and reward them for their efforts in practice.”

It was evident early on that Reynolds was going to be able to empty his bench in this one. Up 4-3, the Panthers went on an 8-0 run and were up 12-3 with 5:48 left. A three-ball from Kaley Schmick, pulled the Royals to within four, 12-8, but the Panthers went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 19-8 and ended the first quarter, leading 23-13.

The second quarter was sloppy on both sides for the first five and a half minutes. Both teams combined to score six points in that time, but the Panthers were up 14 by that time, 29-15 and took a 37-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter featured a 10-0 run for the Panthers, that put them up 50-22. They would add 10 points before the end of the quarter and went into the fourth with a 60-31 lead.

The Panthers (4-1) scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and kept the pedal to the metal the rest of the way, outscoring the Royals 24-9 in the final 10 minutes.

Gracie Doane scored 11 points and Aniquah Swan added 10 points and four steals. Amanda Allen led the Panthers with six rebounds, while Harris, Tanease Richardson and Doane all pulled down five.
Florida Tech shot 45.1 percent (32-for-71) from the field, while holding Warner to 31.1 percent (14-for-45). The Panthers scooped up 33 turnovers as well, helping their cause.

The Panthers were only 4-for-12 from behind the arc, which Reynolds said they had to be better there, but he was pleased overall. “If we can get 20 assists a game and outrebound our opponents by 13-15 a game, we have a chance,” he said. The Panthers accomplished both on Friday.

The Panthers are right back at it Saturday, as they’ll take on Webber International at 1:00 p.m. at the Clemente Center.
