Bombs Away: Barry Buries Florida Tech with Three-Ball

The 16th ranked Barry Buccaneers handed the Florida Tech Men’s basketball team a sound defeat on Saturday night, 96-84 at the Clemente Center in Melbourne.

The Buccaneers (3-0, 2-0 SSC) shot 47.1 percent from behind the arc in the first half, hitting eight of their 17 shots. In the second half, they were only three of 13, but the barrage in the first half was enough to give them the cushion they needed.

The Panthers (2-3, 1-1 SSC) went down early in the first half, 12-4, but a three-pointer by Jordan Majors and a dunk by Robert Booth, quickly closed the gap to 12-9. Majors was fouled and hit both shots, closing the gap to one, before Barry widened things again, with a five-point run.
The Panthers would get within one a couple more times in the half, but Barry pulled away in the last five minutes of the first half.

With 36.4 seconds left, Florida Tech coach Billy Mims was issued two technical fouls after arguing a foul that was given to the wrong player initially. He was shown the exit and assistant coach DeMario Robinson took over the coaching duties.

When all was said, and done in that first half, the Panthers found themselves down, 54-39 and it just proved to be a hole that the Panthers couldn’t climb out of.

“With a team like Barry you can’t play from behind,” Robinson said. “They’re a high-octane team and we knew coming in that Barry wanted to score 90-plus and anytime you give them an opportunity to do that, there’s always a chance for them to beat you.”

Florida Tech did go down by as many as 17 early in the second half, but chipped away and cut the deficit to eight, before the Buccaneers pulled away late, pushing the lead to as many as 22, with 6:26 to go in the game.

The Panthers did cut it down to 10 late, but they just ran out of time. “We gave up too many points and against Barry, you wanna keep those guys under 80 if possible, but they did what they’re supposed to do.”

Sam Daniel ended up with 23 points, but only six of those came in the first half. “Sam had a cold start, he didn’t really get going till the second half,” Robinson said. “If we get some points out of Sam in the first half, maybe it’s a different story coming out in the second half.”

Daniel did add 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Majors had 22 points and seven boards, while Patrick Anderson went 3-for-5 from downtown, helping him to 15 points.

The Panthers will be back home Monday night to host Puerto Rico-Bayamon. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
