Panthers Lose to Rollins in Five Sets

The Florida Tech Volleyball team opened their Sunshine State Conference opener at the Clemente Center on Friday, falling to the Rollins Tars, 3-2. The match kept a couple streaks intact, as Rollins won their seventh straight, while the Panthers suffered their seventh straight loss.

The two teams traded wins in the first four games, with Rollins taking game one and three by identical 25-16 scores. The Panthers took game two 30-28 and game four 25-22, before dropping the fifth set, 15-12.

Rollins opened a 17-8 lead in the first game with a couple extended runs and the Panthers never recovered. The second game was a typical back-and-forth affair, with the Panthers leading 13-12, before Rollins won the next four points, to take the lead.

The Panthers regained the lead with a run of six out of eight points, to regain the lead 25-24. They traded points with the Tars, before winning the final two points and squeaking out the 30-28 victory.
Rollins (7-2, 1-0) took control of the third set early and led 22-12 late. The Panthers never got any kind of run going in the game, never winning more than two points in succession. Game four was the complete opposite, with the Panthers going on a few different runs.

They took four out of the first six points and won five out of six, to take a 17-14 lead, midway through. Rollins bounced back with a run of their own to take a 19-18 lead, before the Panthers took a 22-19 lead. Late. The Panthers took the final three points, hanging on for a 25-22 win.

The final set started well for the Panthers, leading 7-4 early, but Rollins came back, winning six of
seven points, to take a 10-8 lead. The Panthers took an 11-10 lead, but Rollins took five of the final six points, to take the decisive game, 15-12.

Shannon McDonough of Rollins led all players in kills with 24. FIT’s Kelly Germain led her squad with 15 kills, while Olivia Hersey putting up 14 and Jenna Schaffer had 13. Kiersten Rosa again led the team in assists with 44. She has been a machine since the beginning of the season and is showing no signs of slowing down. Cassidy Cason of Rollins led in that category with 57.

Florida Tech’s Becca Bower led in digs with 28, while teammates Nicole Fortuna and Abigael Brenke leading with one ace each.

The Panthers (2-7, 0-1) will have some time to right the ship before getting back on the court next Thursday, when they travel to Boca Raton, to take on Lynn, in another conference contest. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
