Palm Beach Atlantic Topples Florida Tech


The Florida Tech Men’s Soccer team endured almost three hours of weather-related delays on Wednesday, in a 2-1 extra-time loss to the Sailfish in West Palm Beach. Add to that, the eight and a half minutes of overtime and you have a match that ended at 12:14 a.m. on Thursday.

The two teams only combined for six shots in a first half that was played in very sloppy conditions. 

Palm Beach Atlantic finally found the back of the net, just shy of 10 minutes into the second half. Kebba Nyang was able to beat the Panthers defense and then Panthers’ goalie Christian Moerch, giving Palm Beach Atlantic a 1-0 lead.

After an extended lightning delay, the Panthers got on the board when Brandon Smalley took a free kick that he got into the box to Bjoern Jaeger, who passed to Jack Willison. He headed it past PBA goalie Elliott Barker, to knot the game, 1-1.

Palm Beach Atlantic applied most of the offensive zone pressure the rest of the half, taking six shots following the tying goal, with two of them on goal. There were also two corner kicks for the Sailfish during that time.

Florida Tech (5-1-1, 3-1) had the first decent opportunity in the 95th minute, off a corner kick from Josh Thomas, but he was unable to do much with it. Charlie Dennis took a corner for PBA at 98:17, that was headed in by Michael O’Sullivan at the 98:28 mark.

That left Florida Tech with just 11 seconds before the final whistle blew and their first loss of the season was official.

The Panthers ended the night with just six shots and only one shot on goal. PBA finished with 14 and Moerch saved four of them. PBA had seven Corners, while FIT had six.

The Panthers will look to rebound Saturday, when they travel to Boca Raton to take on Lynn University. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.

FIT Women Fall at Florida Southern

Unfortunately, the Panthers were overmatched by the Moccasins and dropped an 87-73 decision at Jenkins Field House on Wednesday night. “They (Florida Southern) did a good job offensively, they did a good job defensively,” said Florida Tech coach John Reynolds, in his postgame interview with Jerry Durney. “Sometimes it’s not that you played so poorly, sometimes just gotta give the other team some credit.” Florida Tech (7-7, 2-5 SSC) did get out to an early 6-2 lead in the game, but the Panthers got some good defense, including a steal by Michaela Gelbaugh with 1:38 left to go in the quarter.
