Perrin’s Complete Game Earns Manatees Series Split
Jon Perrin |
Brevard County Manatees pitcher Jon Perrin finished the
homestand in style Monday night; pitching a complete-game three-hit gem,
helping the Manatees gain a series split with a 4-1 victory against the Charlotte
Stone Crabs.
“I started off pretty hot going four clean innings right off
the bat,” said Perrin. “Just had a good mix – fastball, change-up, slider,
throwing everything for strikes. (Catcher Fidel) “Pena and I were on the same
page pretty much the whole night.”
“He was outstanding tonight,” said Manatees manager Joe
Ayrault of Perrin. “He’s a competitive kid and he mixed his pitches well.”
Perrin, drafted in the 27th round last season, is
the first Brewers’ prospect to throw a complete game this season. He threw 83
pitches through eight innings and 95 for the game, to put an exclamation point
on a memorable night.
Perrin (2-7) got all the help he would need offensively in
the bottom of the first. Corey Ray led off with a ground-rule double against Charlotte
starter Greg Harris and went to third on a George Iskenderian infield hit.
Blake Allemand followed with an infield hit of his own, scoring Ray. An RBI
single by Rubio made it 2-0 and Wendell Rijo reached on an error at third by
Alec Sole, giving the Manatees a 3-0 lead.

“It was good to start off with a three run lead,” said
Ayrault. “We did have a couple base running mistakes in the game, but other
than that, it was a nice ballgame.”
Perrin took over from there, pitching four innings of no-hit
baseball to start things off. He got some help defensively as well, beginning
in that fourth inning with Wendell Rijo making a diving catch on a line drive
hit by Jake Cronenworth. He got through that inning unscathed and got the first
out in the fifth, before making his only real mistake of the night.
Sole made up for his error earlier, driving a 2-1 pitch
385-feet over the right-center field wall. With one swing, Sole ruined the
perfect game and the shutout for Perrin, who bounced back nicely, not letting that
one pitch ruin what he had going.
“I was able to keep the ball on the ground for the most
part,” Perrin said. “I just left one pitch up and it left the yard, but it was
a pretty solid outing, I’m obviously pleased.”
Andrew Velazquez singled off Perrin to start the seventh,
but he was erased on a great play by Jose Cuas at first base, who snared a line
drive off the bat and turned a three-unassisted double play. The only other hit
he allowed in the game was a ninth inning single to Wilmer Dominguez.
“I had some terrific defense played behind me,” he said. “Rijo
nice play on a line drive in the hole and Cuas snagging that line drive for a
double play. Allemand turned a double play, so a lot of good defense.”
Brevard County (12-25, 35-70) tacked one on in the bottom of
the seventh against reliever Jose Alvarado, but had a chance for more. Malik
Collymore led off with a walk and stole second, before Pena reached on an error
at short, one out later. With runners at the corners, Alvarado attempted a
pickoff at first. While Pena was caught off the bag, Collymore attempted to
come home.
The throw home caromed off the backstop and turned into an
out at the plate, scored 1-3-5. Iskenderian did salvage an insurance run with
his triple, making it a 4-1 game.

Some guys after games like this will say they felt good in
the bullpen before the game, in Perrin’s case, it was not something, but
someone who may have made the difference. “My girlfriend got here yesterday,
that might have had something to do with it,” he said, with a smile. “She’s
over here telling me she’s good luck.”
With victories on Sunday and Monday, the Manatees ended the
eight-game season series with the Stone Crabs, winning three of the eight
games. “Good to end on a winning note against those guys,” said Ayrault. “Seven
out of the eight games were decided by one run, so we had a lot of close games
with that squad.”
After an off day on Tuesday, the Manatees will head to
Daytona to play a doubleheader on Wednesday. The second game will be a make-up
game from a rainout on June 30. The team returns home Thursday, to finish the
home-at-home with the Tortugas at 6:35 p.m.
