Medeiros Shaky in Loss at Dunedin

The Dunedin Blue Jays dominated the Brevard County Manatees on Friday night in game two of their three game set. A two-run home run by Ryan McBroom and a two-run single by Anthony Alford were the big blows in a 6-2 Dunedin victory.

The only bright spot for the Manatees came in the top of the eighth inning, when Corey Ray took Justin Shafer deep on a 3-2 count, for his second home run in as many nights and his third of the season. Schafer was cruising along to that point, as he took over for Francisco Rios, who started the game for Dunedin.

The Manatees got to Rios early with Ray leading off the game with a single. Fidel Pena hit into a double play behind him and that would prove costly, as Blake Allemand and Elvis Rubio hit back-to-back singles, with Mitch Ghelfi then getting hit by a pitch to load the bases. David Denson came up with a big opportunity, but Rios got him swinging.

Shafer relieved Rios top start the second and he was in control for much of the night, allowing a double to Allemand in the third inning and proceeding to retire the next 10 men he faced. Meanwhile, he got all the offense he would need in the third inning, against Manatees starter Kodi Medeiros.

After getting the first two outs, Medeiros gave up a triple to Davis and McBroom followed with a two-run shot that stayed just fair and put the D-Jays on top 3-0. Medeiros got a double play in the fourth and looked to be in good shape, but walked two batters and Alford hit a lazy fly ball to right that Elvis Rubio charged in right and the infielders went back on, but nobody could come up with it. The ball dropped in front of Rubio and scored two runs, making it 5-0 game.

Medeiros (4-10) was done after four innings and just didn’t seem to have it. According to the Dunedin broadcast, he was between 84-86 MPH on his fastball and it showed in his final line. He pitched four innings, allowed five hits and five earned runs. He walked four and struck out one, throwing 77 pitches, 40 for strikes.

Kender Villegas came in and shut the Dunedin offense down for the bulk of his appearance. He sent down nine in a row before allowing a single in the bottom of the 8th. That’s when the Blue Jays added to their lead, as reliever Josh Uhen gave up a single to Michael De La Cruz. That answered Ray’s homer in the top of the inning and upped the Blue Jays lead to 6-1.

Schafer (4-5) ran into trouble in the ninth, giving up a double to Mitch Ghelfi and a walk to David Denson. He came back to strike out Jose Cuas for the second out, but gave up an RBI single to Dustin Houle, getting the Manatees one run closer, at 6-2. With the tying run on deck, Jays’ manager Ken Huckabee brought in Dusty Isaacs, who struck out Wendell Rijo, to end the game.

Schafer went 7.2 innings in the win, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out six, throwing 99 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Ray (2-for-4), Allemand (2-for-4) and Ghelfi (2-for-3) combined for six of the Manatees nine hits.

Dunedin had eight hits with Danny Jansen leading the way with a 2-for-4 night. Dunedin has won 11 of the 16 meetings against the Manatees this season.

Dunedin goes for the sweep on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Phil Bickford (0-0, 3.86) will make his second start of the season for the Manatees.
