The Brevard County Manatees (33-62) blew a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday at Charlotte Sports Park, but two errors in the top of the 10th led to a run and the Manatees escaped with a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (46-49). The victory was the fourth in the row for Brevard County.

Jon Perrin got the start for the Manatees and after a rocky first inning that saw him throw 21 pitches, 11 for strikes, allowing just a single. He settled in nicely, retiring 12 in a row.
The Manatees offense scored a run in the third, with Fidel Pena and Jose Cuas hitting back-to-back singles against Charlotte hurler Greg Harris. Harris took over for Brad Boxberger, who pitched the first inning as part of his continuing rehab with the Stone Crabs.

With Pena and Cuas at first and third with one out, Corey Ray grounded one to third. Pena waited for the throw to go to first and he scampered home, beating the throw from first and giving the Manatees a 1-0 lead.

They made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth with a Dustin DeMuth single and stolen base, his second of the season. Elvis Rubio walked and DeMuth went to third as the ball got away from the catcher. Blake Allemand walked, loading the bases. Pena came up and grounded the ball to first, getting DeMuth home.

Charlotte got a run back in the fifth when Armando Araiza snapped the streak of 12 in a row with a two-out single. Jace Conrad doubled him home, making it a 2-1 game. Perrin got the final out in that frame and overcame a walk and a single in the sixth, ending the inning with a ground out by Alec Sole.

Perrin went six full, allowing four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out four, dropping his ERA to 3.10. He threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes and gave way to Freddy Peralta to start the seventh. Peralta got through two innings, before running into trouble in the ninth.
A double, sandwiched between two walks, loaded the bases for the Stone Crabs. That ended the night for Peralta, giving way to Jon Olczak. Conrad was first to face Olczak and he greeted him with a hard line drive to second that Wendell Rijo snagged and flipped to second to double off Andrew Velazquez. That was the first in a series of tough luck goings on for Velazquez.

Olczak went from bases loaded and none out, to being one out away from winning the game. Unfortunately for the Manatees, it wasn’t that easy. Olczak’s pitch to Grant Kay went to the backstop, allowing the tying run to score. With that, there would be free baseball in Port Charlotte.

Jose Alvarado came in to pitch the 10th for the Stone Crabs and got the first out before Malik Collymore reached on a throwing error by Velazquez. The throw went into the crowd and Collymore was awarded second base. Ray was up and Alvarado struck him out, with Collymore heading to third. The throw to third was on line, but Velazquez missed it and the ball went down the left field line, allowing Collymore to score the lead run.

After giving up a walk to Rijo and a single to DeMuth, Alvarado got out of the inning, but it was too little, too late. Brad Kuntz came out of the Manatees bullpen and retired the Stone Crabs in order in the bottom of the 10th, nailing down his third save. Olczak, who blew his fourth save in the ninth, got the win.

With the loss, Charlotte is now 0-37 when trailing after eight innings. They had six hits as a team, getting 2-for-4 nights from Joe McCarthy and Conrad. On the other side, the Manatees had five hits, with DeMuth going 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Game two of the series on Friday will see Bubba Derby take the hill for Brevard County. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
