The Brevard County Manatees won their third straight game Saturday night, beating the St. Lucie Mets 9-4 in front of 1,674 at Tradition Field. Brevard County had 12 hits as a team, with Dustin Houle being the only member of the starting lineup without a hit. He went 0-for-5.

The Manatees (20-35) scored first against St. Lucie starter Scarlyn Reyes (2-7), with a run in the first. Angel Ortega and Dustin DeMuth hit back-to-back one out singles to kick start the offense. DeMuth’s single extended his hitting streak to seven games. Elvis Rubio followed with a walk and Fidel Pena’s ground out scored Ortega with the first run of the night.

St. Lucie (26-29) answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning against Brevard starter Bubba Derby, with a two out rally. Amed Rosario, Kevin Taylor and Michael Katz hit consecutive singles, with Katz bringing in the tying run. Tomas Nido put the finishing touches on the inning with a three-run blast to left-center, giving the home team a 4-1 lead.

Derby (5-3) would allow five more hits in his six innings of work, but kept the Mets off the scoreboard. He walked two and struck out four and allowed the one home run. Of his 87 pitches, 63 were strikes. He would regain the lead in the fourth, thanks to a big inning by his offense, that saw six runs cross the plate, all after the first two outs were recorded.

Taylor Brennan, Malik Collymore and Johnny Davis all singled, loading the bases for Ortega. He singled, scoring one and cutting the deficit in half, 4-2. The bases were still loaded for DeMuth, who came through with another big hit, a two-run double. He has been doing that quite a bit of late and this one tied the game. Rubio chased Ortega and DeMuth home with a single, making it a 6-4 game. He went to second on the throw. Rubio scored on a ground-rule double by Clint Coulter, capping the big inning at 7-4.

Reyes allowed seven runs on 10 hits, walked three and struck out five. He threw 95 pitches, 63 strikes. Kelly Secrest took over for Reyes to start the sixth inning and found trouble in the eighth, hitting Pena with a pitch after one man was out. He paid for it when Clint Coulter stepped to the plate and took him deep, making it a 9-4 game. For Coulter, it was his third home run of the season. He seems to be coming around a bit offensively, since he returned from the disabled list on May 26.

Derby gave way to Junior Rincon to start the seventh. He gave up one hit, a walk and recorded a strikeout in his three innings of work. He was credited with a save, throwing 35 pitches, 20 for strikes.

The series moves to Space Coast Stadium Sunday, as these two teams continue their split home-at-home series. Angel Ventura (1-2, 3.43 ERA) will take the mound for the Manatees against Josh Prevost (3-6, 4.64 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
