Jupiter Blanks Brevard County in Series Opener

The Brevard County Manatees hit the road Friday night,
starting a four-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads. It was a tough
night for the Manatees’ offense as they were shut out 2-0, at Roger Dean
Stadium.
Brevard County (14-27) scattered five hits, all singles. Johnny
Davis led off the game with an infield hit, against Hammerheads starter Dillon
Peters. That hit extended his consecutive on-base streak to 26 games. He
got it out of the way early, but did not get another hit the rest of the night.
Angel
Ortega followed with a single and it looked like the Manatees were in
business. Unfortunately, Dustin DeMuth followed with a strikeout and Davis was
then caught on the front end of a double steal. Ortega was safe, but he was
stranded there when Fidel Pena struck out.
Clint
Terry (0-1) made a spot start for the Manatees, in place of Kodi Medeiros,
who missed the start presumably because of the back spasms he suffered last
weekend in his start at Dunedin. Terry made his last appearance in the same game
against Dunedin, pitching three scoreless innings, earning the save.
Friday marked his first start of the season and he ran into
trouble early. Justin Bohn tripled with one out in the bottom of the first and
came home on a Brian Anderson’s 11th double of the season. Terry
would give up one more single in the inning, but kept Jupiter from adding to
the lead.
Ortega led off the fourth with a single. It was the first
hit for the Manatees since his single back in the first. It also made Ortega
the only Brevard County batter to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. He also
stole second in the inning, but was stranded there. That would be the last time a Manatees’
runner would reach second.
Jupiter (21-21) tacked on another run in the fourth. John
Norwood led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Brian
Schales. Dexter Kjerstad singled him home, giving the Hammerheads a 2-0 lead.
That was more than enough for Peters (4-2), who was on his game. He went six
innings, giving up four hits and striking out eight. 46 of his 69 pitches were
strikes. Scott Lyman relieved him with two innings of one hit baseball and Ryan
Reid pitched the ninth, picking up his second save.
Terry did not pitch badly by any means, giving the Manatees
five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and
struck out one. He threw 72 pitches, 47 for strikes. Kender Villegas came out
of the bullpen in the sixth and struck out the first batter he faced. He then
inexplicably lost control. He hit Schales in the shoulder and Kjerstad in the
helmet. Thankfully, both batters were okay and Villegas got a visit from the
umpire and the Manatees coaching staff. He regained his composure and ended up
getting out of the inning.
Villegas went on to pitch the final two innings, three in
all and struck out five without allowing a hit. He threw 36 pitches, 25 for
strikes. Considering the way, the sixth inning started, that’s pretty
impressive.

Game notes: Malik
Collymore made his Advanced-A debut with the Manatees on Friday, after
being called up from Helena on Thursday. He will have better nights but went
0-for-3 Friday, striking out and hitting into two double plays.
Roster news: The
Brewers signed Minor League free-agent right-handed pitcher Gage
Smith on Friday. He was assigned to Brevard County; a team he is familiar
with. He made two appearances against the Manatees earlier this season as a
member of the Lakeland Flying Tigers. He last pitched May 13, against Daytona.
