Hanhold Goes Seven Strong in Loss at Jupiter

The Brevard County Manatees were blanked for the third time in the last four days on Monday, as the Jupiter Hammerheads hung on for a 1-0 win in the series finale at Roger Dean Stadium. The game took one hour and 46 minutes and the teams combined for eight hits. Five of those hits were off the bats of Brevard County, but they just couldn’t scratch across a run.

Manatees’ starter Eric Hanhold was the unfortunate victim of the lack of run support. He did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fourth inning. A single to Justin Bohn was the first offense to speak of for the Hammerheads. Hanhold came back to pick off Bohn and got Brian Anderson to fly out.

It was a tough luck night for Hanhold (2-5) and the only run he gave up, came in the fifth inning. Taylor Ard led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. A single by John Norwood got Ard to third and Hanhold came back to get a double play off the bat of Brian Schales, who hit it to second. Unfortunately for Hanhold, that was enough to score Ard and give Jupiter the only run they would need.

Hanhold pitched seven innings on Monday, giving up only three hits. He walked two and struck out four, throwing 89 pitches (58 strikes). To give up a run on a double play is just gut-wrenching, considering he pitched as well as he did up to that point. He kept pace with his mound counterpart, Michael Mader who got the win in his five innings of work.

Mader, who is the Marlins’ 25th ranked prospect, gave up three hits on Monday, including a first inning double to Angel Ortega. That would be the only extra-base hit for the Manatees in the contest. Mader would strike out four without walking a batter on Monday, throwing 72 pitches, 47 for strikes.

Scott Lyman went 2.2 innings, striking out the first two in the eighth, before surrendering a single to Jose Cuas. Ryan Reid came took over from there.

Reid got through the ninth, picking up his third save, but it didn’t come easy. Johnny Davis, who had a 28-game on-base streak on the line Monday took until the top of the ninth to extend that to 29, with a bunt single. He stole second, his 14th swiped bag of the season. One out later, Dustin DeMuth moved Davis to third on a ground out, but the game ended when Fidel Pena grounded out, leaving the tying run 90-feet away.

With the loss, the Manatees drop to 14-30. They return home Tuesday to start a six-game homestand against the Clearwater Threshers. They will have a Major League rehabber waiting for them, as the Brewers' Will Smith will be joining the Manatees for a few days. The announcement was made Monday afternoon and was accompanied by a press release.

Brevard County has yet to name a starter for Tuesday’s game. It is possible that Smith could start the game, but if it follows the pattern of other rehab starts, he would only pitch an inning. The game is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. start.
